American Country Music Larry singer Gatlin is famous for giving away one of Country music's best numbers. With his brothers, their group became one of most booming artists of the 70s and 80s. He gave a total of 33 number#1 40 singles, with both his solo recordings and those with his brothers. As they became more and more recognized grew the band became known as Larry Gatlin & the Gatlin Brothers.

During this time, country music was fusing up with polished pop music arrangements, giving rise to a completely new genre, known to be as Countrypolitan. And it was this fortunate time for Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers, when they enjoyed a great deal of success.

Gatlin was born in Seminole, Texas on May 2 in 1948 and was raised up, listening to Country and Gospel music. Even in early years, he and his brothers, Steve and Rudy always sung and performed together. In their youth, they often sang in their local church. They performed on local radio stations from time to time, and occasionally on television shows. They also recorded a Gospel music album for the Gospel label Sword and Shield. In 1966, after high school, Gatlin took admission in the University of Houston. He was a fantastic football player, infact once, caught a touchdown pass in a game in which the University of Houston scored 100 points.

Soon after, he joined a Gospel music group called the Imperials. The Imperials went on to perform in Las Vegas, Nevada in January 1971 at Jimmy Dean's Las Vegas Revue. There, he went renowned Country singer, Dottie West, when she thought he looked like Mickey Newbury.

West Soon met Gatlin and was delighted with his songwriting skills. West was so impressed she recorded two of Gatlin's compositions, You're the Other Half of Me and Once You Were Mine. West passed one of his demo tapes around Nashville, Tennessee (the Country music capital), and even planned for him to re-locate there. She even bought Gatlin a plane ticket for Nashville. West later recorded other compositions by Gatlin that would later become hits for him, including Broken Lady, which was put on West's 1978 album Dottie.

Steve Gatlin, the middle Gatlin brother, was born in 1951. After high school in 1969, Steve attended Texas Tech in Lubbock, where he graduated in 1973 with an elementary education degree. He taught in the Lubbock Independent School system and married his wife who was also a teacher.

Tammy Wynette performed with younger brother Rudy and sister LaDonna in Lubbock and asked Steve to sing with them. Shortly, Steve moved to Nashville to work for Tammy. Once he was there, the Gatlins instantly began preparation to hit the stage again!

Steve's wife, Cynthia, who was also a teacher, moved to Nashville in 1975 to work for Tammy Wynette, which helped him follow his dreams. Soon, the Brothers recorded their Grammy-winning hit Broken Lady. Even though they had not yet started their tour journey, opportunity came at their door-step, allowing them to join forces recording hit after hit. Steve anon took on many daily responsibilities for the Brothers, managing tours, recording schedules, interviews plus singing and playing bass. He has also produced 3 Christmas CD's for the Brothers, the latest release in 2002.

Raised on gospel music, Rudy was indeed born in a melodiously gifted family with his mother playing the piano and his father playing the guitar. They taught him to sing harmony, listening to the albums of gospel groups like the Statesmen Quartet and Blackwood Brothers Quartet. Rudy was just two and-a-half years of age, when big brother Larry, age six, persuaded their mother he was ready to join him and Steve, age four. Winning a talent show in Abilene, Texas, they started singing in church, on radio and the Slim Willet Show on KRBC-TV.

The Gatlins pursued with a musical career, while mixed with school, sports and church. College separated them except for holidays and summer appearances until they joined again in Nashville.

s The Gatlin Brothers recorded numerous CD's and did many tours all through the United States playing sold out concerts, fairs and Las Vegas. The Academy of Country Music (ACM) honored them with awards for Single of the Year for 'All the Gold in California' and Album of the Year for 'Straight Ahead.' They gave great performances on the Country Music Association (CMA) awards shows, country music specials like The Barbara Mandrell Show, The Johnny Cash 25th Anniversary Show, CBS's 'Country Comes Home,' Good Morning America and the Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson and Jay Leno. 'The Gatlin Brothers Special' aired on ABC. Their journeys also included country music festivals in England and the most popular TV shows like 'Musicladen' in Germany.
