Tanglewood concerts date back to 1936 when BSO organized its first ever Tanglewood music festival in Berkshires where the orchestra performed under a massive tent. Next year, the musicians led by orchestra's music director Serge Koussevitzky refused to perform unless a permanent facility was built for the concert. This led to the formation of a permanent open air structure referred to as the Shed or the Koussevitzky Music Shed. The place had the seating capacity for more than 5000 people and has been serving as as BSO's summer home since then.
In 1940, three years after the Shed was constructed, Koussevitzky initiated the Berkshire Music Center, a summer academy for emerging professionals and newbies to take part in performances, workshops and music classes. The center was later renamed as the Tanglewood Music Center, the well-known music venue of Lenox. Today, the Tanglewood Music Center serves as the home of BSO and the annual Tanglewood Music Festival which includes series of outdoor jazz concerts, chamber music, musical theatre, contemporary music and much more. Do not miss out on catching some of the world's best musicians live and up close at this unparalleled summer extravaganza.
Tanglewood concert is the premier music festival of America and is considered to be one of the greatest in the world. In 1959, the Shed underwent renovation and was expanded to include the adjacent Highway estate in the Tanglewood Music Center. The same year acoustic refurbishment was also made in the shed to include the innovative design by BBN Technologies. In 1994, Seiji Ozawa Hall was named after the Japanese conductor who took over BSO in 1964 and remained as the orchestra's director for 29 years, was opened. The hall serves as the venue for most of the Tanglewood chamber and orchestra concerts. It is designed by Boston based architect firm, William Rawn Associates, Architects Inc.
