Founded in 2011, Polica's core members are; singer Channy Leaneagh and producer Ryan Olson. Leaneagh was a part of the band, Roma di Luna, before she joined Polica. She worked on three albums that the former band released, where she also played violin. Her voice has been described as versatile by AllMusic. Polica the band wouldn't have come into existence hadn't it been Ryan Olsen's consistent persuasion to record some songs. Not only has Olson been the reason behind the formation of this band, but he has been the inspiring force behind the formation of many other groups as well, which include Digitata and Gayngs. However, his most successful venture was the formation of Polica. Apart from Leaneagh and Olson, the band consists of talented artists like the drummers, Drew Christopherson and Ben Ivascu. Together, they tour across the globe, entertaining fans wherever they stop.
Although it's a young band, Polica's popularity amongst people has been growing rapidly. They have received comments like “They are the best band I've ever heard” from Justin Vernon. This talented group has released two albums till now which, includes its first release, Give You the Ghost. It hit the shelves in 2012 and received raving reviews. It was given 3.5 stars by AllMusic and a 9/10 by Drowned in Sound. The work was also appreciated by Rolling Stone, which described the album as “… sound of heartbreak and celebration happening simultaneously.”
This was followed by the release of their second album Shulamith which came out last year. All songs from this album were recorded in Indie Pop which was released by Mom + Pop Music. This album received more praise from the critics and audiences than the first one. AllMusic gave it 4 stars and The Guardian gave it 3. It was also ranked at #1 on US Heatseekers Albums chart and #4 on the UK Indie Albums Chart which in itself is a proof of how much the audiences admired the work by Polica.
The band recently released “You Don't Own Me” cover, which was described by Robbie Daw from Idolator as one with gorgeous bass. Previously, this song by Lesley Gore has been covered by many eminent singers, which includes Dusty Springfield and Nicole Scherzinger. Polica has given the track a fresh makeover yet again. Though the song officially comes out on the 10th of June, the band has been performing it since last year as a part of its Shulamith tour. Apart from this, Polica is also scheduled to release three more tracks as a part of its Deluxe Edition of Shulamith. The list includes “Raw Exit”, “Baby Blue” and “Great Regret.”
Not only has the band's recorded albums that have garnered rave reviews, but their live performances have been praised by many as well. The New York Times while appreciating their concert at Webster Hall in 2013 commented that the band's “music opens up wide spaces to expose tidings of desires…” You too can enjoy a live show by Polica as they come to your nearest venue and perform some of their greatest hits.
