A loner in childhood, Maxwell is a black American who had the right zeal enabling him to pull it off as an R&B artist later on. He was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1973 with a Puerto Rican and West Indian bloodline. Some of the biggest tragedies bring out the best potential in human beings. This also happened to Maxwell whose parents were killed in a plane crash when he was just 3 years old. The incident affected him propelling him to start singing in his Baptist church as he already had deep religious affiliations running in his family. Thus, the tragedy brought out a star in him. Though Maxwell started with church singing, yet his seriousness with music did not really take off by the time he was 17. It was then that he started writing his own lyrics for the songs. The instrument he used was a cheap Casino keyboard gifted by his buddy. In the initial phase of his career, the early '80s urban R&B had an impact on his music style. By 1991, the New York club became his favorite place where he performed for the public. His big time came in 1994 when he caught the eye of Columbia and entered into a recording contract with the company.

In the early 1990s, Maxwell's quest for perfection made him form associations with Lyricist Leon Ware and accomplished guitarist Wah Wah Watson. Thus, the early 1990's, he recorded his debut song Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite with the help of his team. However, the finished product was not really accepted by Columbia which put aside the album for two years, before it was ultimately issued in 1996. Classical soul music was at the base of Maxwell's creations, but he was not recognized until his second single 'Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder)' became successful with the audience. At that time, his first song 'Urban Hang Suite' also became a hit with the public selling over 500,000 copies. It also earned a gold status being nominated for a Grammy Award.

Maxwell had his breakthrough on MTV in June 1997 when he recorded an episode in 'MTV Unplugged' in New York City. The program basically was one of the many in the concert series where he performed his own songs apart from covers of songs by Kate Bush. Maxwell had a small rift about his rights on the release of his album. Finally only seven of his songs were released in an album. In 1998, Maxwell marketed his second studio album 'Embrya'. Then in 1999, he released 'Fortunate', a song with wordings by R. Kelly. The same single also served as the soundtrack of the movie 'Life', the same year. Not only the single was a hit but it occupied the number one slot on Billboard Tracks chart. 'Fortunate' is still ranked as one of the most winning single by Maxwell. His third album "Now" set its sail in the market in 2001 going to the top of the Billboard 200 album chart. 'Lifetime' was one of the hit songs in that album, not to forget 'This woman's work'.

Currently, Maxwell is working on his fourth album 'BLACKsummers' night'. According to Maxwell, this album has been planned to be one of the three albums in the series of albums in the coming three years. The second album will be released in 2010 followed by the third in 2011. In April 2009, the song 'Pretty Wings' was played in a world premiere on a popular morning show.
