Idina Kim Mentzel was born in Queens, New York in 1971 to a therapist mother & a pajama salesman father. Mentzel altered her name to Menzel after her parents' divorce, & after earning a Bachelor in Fine Arts in Drama from NYU, auditioned for Rent. Opening off-Broadway, the musical soon went to Broadway's Nederlander Theater in January 1996, earning her not only exposure in the character of Maureen Johnson, but also many accolades for her commanding performance. Menzel then made her television debut in 1998 in Hercules: The Animated Series, & put her beautiful voice to full use in her debut album Still I Can't Be Still. It was not very warmly received, but Menzel's career was going places on the stage, where she starred in Summer of '42 & took up challenging roles in multiple award winning musicals Hair & Aida. The turn of the millennium saw her win plaudits off-Broadway for her role as Kate in the production of The Wild Party & her part in the controversial yet popular The Vagina Monologues. Then came her moment in the sun as her role as Elphaba in Winnie Holzman & Stephen Schwartz's Wicked received a thunderous reception in 2003. By that time she had already made a foray into Hollywood via her debut Kissing Jessica Stein, & starred in a few others. Wicked made her a household name, & she propagated its all-conquering success in West End too, sandwiching a successful role in the musical See What I Wanna See in between. Her second album meanwhile fared better than her first, & she landed further movie roles in the film adaptation of Rent, the Salma Hayek-Colin Farrell starrer Ask the Dust, & in Disney's mega-hit Enchanted. Her third album, I Stand, became her first to chart in 2008. The last two years have seen her land multiple roles on television, most notably in the Grey's Anatomy spin-off Private Practice & Glee, while her stage career is on the up with Chess & Nero.
Menzel received a Tony & Drama Desk nomination for Rent & The Wild Party, before Wicked's opening at the Gershwin Theater changed the dimension of things for her. She won a Tony Award for Lead Actress Performance along with three Broadway.com Awards, & also scooped up nominations for Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle & Drama League Awards. The West End run for her role as the misunderstood green-skinned & fiercely ambitious Elphaba (the future Wicked Witch of the West) also won her a WhatsOnStage.com Award, while see received two nominations for See What I Wanna See. In music, I Stand reached #58 on Billboard 200, also spawning "Defying Gravity", a dance mix of the Wicked signature song. She also sang the much-acclaimed "What If" duet & a "Poker Face" version (#20) on Glee.
Menzel's wide vocal range & use of the "belt" technique while singing has won her many fans that will be itching to get their hands on the latest Idina Menzel tickets. Her powerful singing & captivating acting has seen her perform in West End, Broadway, Royal Albert Hall & other famous arenas.
