Cibo Matto is the name of an indie-rock duo formed by two New York based Japanese women in 1994. With name borrowed from Italian dictionary, meaning crazy food, Cibo Matto was primarily focused on producing songs with lyrics about food. The names of these two Japanese expatriates, creators of Cibo Matto are Miho Hatori and Yuke Honda. They have been on various US tours and have now announced to kick off their road trip in early 2014. The tour will be in support of their upcoming album "Hotel Valentine." Fans can get the Cibo Matto tickets in advance to catch this trip hop band live onstage in their city.
Pop has always been huge in this part of the world but Cibo Matto is something new. They captured the audience in their initial years with songs that revolved around food. Despite having two Japanese women as its founding members, Cibo Matto didn't get as much popularity in Japan as it did in US. In US their following was significantly more than that in Japan. This is quite evident from the number of copies their first album "Viva! La Woman" sold in both countries i.e. 74,000 in US and only 20,000 in Japan, according to Billboard.
Before they formed Cibo Matto, Hatori and Honda used to be a part of Leitoh Lychee, a noise rock band. Before long, the two came up with the idea of forming their own band and Cibo Matto was born with Hatori on the vocals and Honda on instruments. The band came up with its first self-titled EP in 1995 which was released on EL Diablo Records. It caught the attention of Warner Bros as something new and interesting that has the potential. Later that year, the band was signed by Warner Bros. Records and the duo started working on their first studio album.
Few months passed and the band released "Viva! La Woman" in January 1996. Produced by Mitchell Froom, It was an urban trip-hop album with songs about edibles like "Apple," "Birthday Cake," The Candy Man," "Beef Jerky" and "Know Your Chicken." "Sugar Water" was the first single from the album and was a modest hit on college radio and dance charts. The song was followed by an innovative music video featuring the split-screen technique. Two more songs "Birthday Cake" and "Know Your Chicken" were released with music videos which enjoyed considerably great reviews and success on MTV.
Shortly after the release of their first album, the band appeared on various TV shows including Viva Variety, Oddville and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. One of their songs, the "Birthday Cake" was featured in a video game named "Jet Set Radio Future." Cibo Matto also produced a song "Aguas De Marco" meaning the Waters of March for an AIDS benefit album "Silencio=Muerte: Red Hot + Latin" by Red Hot Organization. The album was given A-grade by Entertainment Weekly who praised Cibo Matto's kitschy club music as lovable and kooky. Allmusic called the album 'diverse and entertaining' and admired the band's innovativeness by calling them 'fresh and funky.'
A year passed and the band came up with its second EP titled" Super Relax." Shortly thereafter, three new members came onboard and the band released it's second studio album "Stereo ? Type A" in 1999. Although by that time the band had expanded into broader subjects and theme, departing from the much-loved sound of their first release, this album was much liked by both fans and critics. The band played and toured till 2002 when it disbanded with all members going solo. Cibo Matto reunited in 2011 and performed at a benefit concert. Later, it kicked off a massive reunion tour of US dubbed "Yeah, Basically Cibo Matto."
Currently the band consists of three members including Honda, Hatori and Yuko Araki, the drummer who joined in 2011. In June 2013, Cibo Matto announced the plans to release its next studio album "Hotel Valentine" which has now been confirmed to be released on 14th Feb, 2014. The bands also disclosed plans for a 2014 North American tour whose dates have already been announced. Now that the band is on tour, this is your chance to book Cibo Matto tickets and catch a truly unique band live.
