A musical based on the music and life of the Beatles, Beatlemania, was originally conceived and produced by David Krebs and Steve Leber.
The musical was premiered on May 26, 1977 in Boston and performed there for a month after which it"s moved to Winter Garden Theatre in New York City and after completing its 1006 performance-run the musical closed on October 17, 1979.
After its performance run, the musical went on the international "Beatlemania Bus and Truck tour". The musical kept on tour until in 1983, when it was sued by Beatles Company called "Apple Corps LTD".
As the fame of the musical was at its peak, "Beatlemania" started having permanent shows in several cities around the globe, and in addition to that, several semi-temporary shows in a number of cities as well.
Shows were also opened in Los Angeles, London, Cincinnati, and Chicago, as the musical sustained its performance run in New York. 10 bunks were also formed by the 50 original cast members of the show in the show"s influential years.
After the Beatlemania Bus and Truck tour ended in 1983, several revival tours continue even today in addition to short term tours in Africa, Asia, Australia and Europe. The musical moved to Lunt-Fontanne Theatre during its performance run in New York and ultimately moved to Palace theatre.
Beatlemania: The Album was released on Arista Records in 1978, and included the soundtracks from the show, featuring the contributions by the original first and second cast members of the show.
As the album debuted, it received positive received positive reviews both by music critics and fans and even stayed on Billboard Hot 100 for couple of weeks, but after it got off the chart its popularity just vanished into the thin air.
Album featured the original cast members including Randy Clark, Jeo Pecorino, Mitch Weissman, Alan Lebeouf, Tom Teeley, Les Fradkin, Justin Mcneill and Bobby Taylor. The tracks included on the album weren"t entirely the original songs from the show instead most of them were re-recorded in the studio.
The musical was adapted in to a feature film after being in the process of production for about four years. The production of the Beatlemania: The Movie started in 1980 by the USA videos production. The movie didn"t received positive reviews after its release so the future plans for making a sequel to it were dropped immediately.
The cast members of the movie included David Leon as rhythm guitarist, Mitch Weissman as bass guitarist, Ralph Castelli as the drummer and Tom Teeley played the lead guitarist.
Although it is said the only the first four cast members should be regarded as the original cast members, but the first 50 cast members are known as the "Original" Cast members.
By the end of the first run of Beatlemania, casting took place independently as many of the revival tours used the nomenclatures such as "The Return of Beatlemania", "Beatlemania now", "Rain", "Beatlemania again", "The Broadway cast of Beatlemania" and "The Fab Four" etc.
