The Band of Heathens is a rock and roll music band from Austin in Texas in the United States of America. It comprises of three original songwriters better known as Gordy Quist, Colin Brooks and Ed Jurdi. All three of them used to share the bill at the popular Momo’s which is a club located in Austin. Initially, they all performed individually, but then they collaborated with one another and began to share the stage and the club. The three of them brought the acclaimed bassist Seth Whitney to their band.
The Band of Heathens played on Wednesday nights at the club under the name of “The Good Time Supper Club”. A review of the band was written in a local paper that misprinted the name of the band as “The Heathens”. That is when the name of the band was changed to its present name. In 2007, John Chipman a drummer by profession became a part of the band along with Trevor Nealon a keyboardist. They performed in the studio while the recording of “Top Hate Crown & the Clapmaster’s Son” and “One Foot in the Ether” took place. Soon enough Nealon as well as Chipman joined the band on tours that took place in 2011.
The first recording of the Band of Heathens which was labeled as “Live from Momo’s” was recorded on West 6th Street which was in Austin and has now shut down. This recording gained them an immense fan following and also brought them to public fame as well as national attention. At the Austin Music Awards in 2007, the band won in the category of “Best New Band”. After the release of the first recording, it released another live recorded CD/DVD which was titled as “Live at Antone’s.
On the 20th of May in 2008, Band of Heathens successfully released their debut self-titled studio recorded alum. Ray Wylie Hubbard produced the album for the band that features notable musicians such as Gurf Morlix, Stephen Bruton and Patty Griffin. The album was such a success that it went on to the number one slot on the popular AMA radio charts. In 2008 in November the Americana Music Association announced the list of the Top 100 Albums of the Americana Charts. The band fruitfully came on the number 8th slot on the charts. It was also announced that their album was amongst the most played albums on the acclaimed Americana Airplay Charts in 2008.
In 2009, the Band of Heathens was given a nomination in the category of “New Emerging Artist” award. This came by the Americana Music Association. The following year in 2010, the band was once again given a nomination by the Americana Music Association in the category of the “Best Duo/Group of the Year”. In 2011, the Band of Heathens successfully released its fifth album which was the band’s third studio album and was titled as “Top hat Crown & the Clapmaster’s Son”. The success of this album was seen when it was listed in the Americana Albums of 2011 in the top 10 most played albums of the year. This album turned out to be the third consecutive album of the band to land up on the top 10 list of the year’s end. The fifth album has also been the last studio project with Colin Brooks.
