Major League Baseball, or simply MLB, is an association that functions together with the National League (NL) and the American League (AL), via a cooperative organizational structure that has developed steadily between them, since 1903. During the year 2000, the two leagues, NL and AL, officially split up as separate authorized units, preserving all their rights and functions combined. This American-based sports league, called MLB, is regarded as the leading professional baseball league of the world. It consists of 30 professional baseball teams, where 29 teams of them are in the U.S. and only 1 in Canada, called the Toronto Blue Jays. These teams comprise of players from numerous countries from all around the world.
Baseball, one of the oldest, yet a very well-appreciated spectator sport, especially in the American history, developed in the first half of the 1800s, when children and amateur players used to play it. It is an aggressive game of talent, which is played between two teams, comprising nine members each, using a hard ball and a bat. Nowadays, with the game's growing popularity, professional baseball has become the center of attention of many baseball enthusiasts, ultimately attracting a huge number of spectators, from all around the globe, to ballparks each year. Baseball even amuses a million more fans by means of media, such as radio and television broadcasts. The game is often referred to as being the nationwide hobby, or rather a pastime, of the U.S, because of its strong tradition and great popularity. Nevertheless, the game is not only common in the United States alone, but it is also played by people of all ages and races, throughout the whole wide world.
In North America, the Major League Baseball (MLB) symbolizes the maximum level of baseball competition. The date of its inauguration is a topic which is still under debate and confusion, however, the organization itself has used 1869 as the year of the primary professional team, known as Cincinnati Red Stockings. Controlled by the Major League Baseball Constitution, under the direction of Commissioner of Baseball - currently Bud Selig, MLB employs and retains the sport's umpiring crews, labor, and negotiates marketing, and television agreements.
MLB, an institute, yet a lawful entity, is divided into two separate leagues, the American League and the National League, and encompasses 14 teams within the AL, and 16 in the NL. Each of these teams is further divided into three divisions, known as the East Division, the West Division, and the Central Division. There are 162 games in each season, with additional game/games if a situation of a tie breaker is required to decide post-season involvement. The rules and regulations are same between the two leagues, but with only one exception, i.e. the AL maneuvers under the Designated Hitter Rule, whereas, the NL does not. The home team league rules determine the use of the DH Rule in the All-Star, World Series games, and inter-league play.
The MLB team, which has won most championships, 26 till date, is the New York Yankees, falling under the East Division of the American League. However, the most recent championship has been won by the Philadelphia Phillies team of the East Division, National League. Other popular MLB teams include Baltimore Orioles, Chicago Cubs, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Milwaukee Brewers, Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Angels, Atlanta Braves, Washington Nationals, Los Angeles Dodgers, and many more.
