Wiley And The Hairy Man is a spectacular play that is set to see performances at several venues including the Saginaw Valley State University. It is based upon African folklore that spread through the Creole population in America. It was then documented back in the thirties when President Franklin D. Roosevelt started a project in which authors collected folktales from all over the US and wrote them down. A folktale of the same name was written down by Donnell Van de Voort who had heard it from a gardener as a child. It was this story that was then adapted into a play by the renowned Susan Zeder back in the eighties and has since then been performed all over the US and seen by many through Wiley And The Hairy Man tickets.
Wiley And The Hairy Man the play first premiered on stage at the theatre in the Saginaw Valley State University. In this play, Roberts famously played the role of hound dog to Wiley in a role that has gone down in history as one of the most astounding ever. He would then go on to head the university's children's theater division as part of its theatre program so as to attract a young audience. As a play, it is innovative and it makes use of a Greek chorus complete with narration in rhyme. It follows the story of Wiley, a young boy, and his hound dog and the antagonist of the play who personifies all fears that Wiley has in his heart.
In Wiley And The Hairy Man, Wiley ends up saving the adults and Mammy tries to help him out. He is seen overcoming his worst fears and doing what he thought he couldn't do. It is a play that is meant for children from first to fifth graders but is also perfect for adults, many of them enjoying the play immensely. In the play, Wiley is played by Raheem Saltmarshall and Rustin Myers plays the Hairy Man. The chorus in the play is particularly magical as it turns into quick sand, waving trees and even a prickly bush, coming alive at times. It is usually performed at the university where it is part of a special event catering to children.
Outside of the university, Wiley And The Hairy Man has also been performed at venues all over the US through a touring program conducted by The Tran Company in which various schools are visited each year. This is particularly commendable as budget cuts have led to schools being unable to attend productions. This play has also led to other similar plays from the university, including plays such as Code Name Bully which was launched in response to surveys taken from students. It is about giving kids tools to cope with bullies at school and other places.
