The Washington Ballet as evident from the name is a ballet ensemble that is based in the city of Washington D.C. The development of this ensemble can be traced back to the mid 40's. Lisa Gardiner was a ballet teacher who was the mentor of renowned ballet artist Mary Day who was a native of Washington City. Together these two founded The Washington School of Ballet. Marry Day is often nicknamed as "Grand Dame of Ballet in the Nation's Capitol." During the 50's the ballet dancers from The Washington School of Ballet got a chance to tour Virginia, New York and Dominican Republic. During this time the school also had a chance to perform with the National Symphony Orchestra.
The first ever premier performance of this school was in 1961 when its ballet artists performed world famous work of Russian master composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky called The Nutcracker in collaboration with National Symphony Orchestra. Eventually in 1976 with the financial help of National Endowment for the Arts, The Washington Ballet was founded under the patronage of Mary Day.
Soon Mary Day appointed an administrative director named Peter Grigsby who played an important role in hiring new fresh talent. Some star members of The Washington Ballet at that time were Robin Hardy, Terry Lacy, Julie Miles, Philip Rosemond, Brian Jameson and Patricia Miller. From 1979 till 1987 resident choreographer was Choo San Goh, who played a pivotal role in developing it from a pre-professional into professional level ballet company. Till the death of Goh in 1987 nineteen ballets were choreographed and staged under his direction.
The Washington Ballet during the 80's and 90's managed to perform not only in the US but also toured other countries like South America, Russia, Japan, China and Malaysia. Further fame and success came to the company when Cuban-American artistic director Septime Webre joined. He was a visionary director and worked on classic ballets like Where the Wild Things Are, Peter Pan, Carmina Burana, Journey Home, Cinderella and State of Wonder. The Washington Ballet has also staged the works of other masters like Mark Morris, Edwaard Liang Christopher Wheeldon, George Balanchine and Twyla Tharp.
In the last few years, some of the ballets that have been performed are Agon, Apollo, Before Nightfall, Bolero, Blue Until June, Double Contrasts, The Eyes That Gently touch, The Firebird, The Four Temperaments, In the Upper Room and The Leaves are Fading. Current dancers for the company are Brooklyn Mack, Jonathan Jordan, Luis R Torres, Morgann Rose, Jared Nelson, Sona Kharatian, Hyun Woong Kim, Ayano Kimura and Tamas Krizsa.
The Washington Ballet works on a tight yearly schedule as the ensemble is giving performances not just in the home city but also in other states throughout the year. You can come with your family or friends to watch some of your favorite ballets but for this you first need to check out the event calendar then you need to select your favorite performance and last but not the least you have to have The Washington Ballet tickets to the show.
