The Tulsa Project Theatre is set to kick off one of its most interesting seasons yet, filled with brilliant musicals, plays and other performances. The theatre is the only Actor's Equity Association affiliate in Tulsa and is the resident theatre company of The Cox Business Center's Assembly Hall. This year marks the fourth season of the company. Previously, the company has staged Miracle on 34th Street The Musical and La Cage Aux Folles for live audiences. The previous season also marked the first time that the company performed a play, Deathtrap, at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center's Norman Theatre. Catch all of its musicals and plays by pre-ordering Tulsa Project Theatre tickets for the season's many performances now.
All performances by the Tulsa Project Theatre take place at the Assembly Hall which is part of the Cox Business Center, except for plays which take place at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center. In 2014, the theatre's upcoming performances include The Music Man, a fabulous musical by Meredith Wilson. This exciting musical follows the story of Harold Hill, a fast-talking travelling salesman who cons people living in River City, Iowa to purchase uniforms and instruments for a boys' band he promises to find. His plan is to raise the cash and skip town but this plan goes awry when he falls for Marian the librarian. She, in turn, transforms the conman into a respectable citizen of the community, going so far as to form the band even.
The Music Man, which will be staged soon by the Tulsa Project Theatre, is a fabulous play with music and lyrics by Meredith Wilson, who also wrote the book with Franklin Lacey. The musical premiered in 1957 on Broadway and was followed by a 1961 West End production. In 1980, The Music Man saw a Broadway revival, followed by a second Broadway revival in 2000. During and after that, this musical has seen numerous productions and plays in many parts of the world. It has also won several awards, including the Tony Award for the 'Best Musical'.
In 1957, The Music Man, which will be performed once again by the Tulsa Project Theatre, was one of the most popular musicals to premiere on Broadway. It ran for nearly fourteen hundred performances. Its original cast album also won the very first Grammy Award for 'Best Original Cast Album' and also ranked Number One on the Billboard charts for a record two hundred and forty five weeks. The musical's popularity also led to a movie adaptation in 1962 and many more Broadway revivals, as well as a TV remake in 2003.
The Tulsa Project Theatre will be performing the musical in a series of upcoming shows, to the joy of the many theater patrons in and out of Tulsa. This is, after all, a musical that has won Tony Awards, Theatre World Awards and Drama Desk nominations. It can be seen live at the Assembly Hall at the Cox Business Center by purchasing Tulsa Project Theatre tickets.
