Here is the fantastic singer-songwriter and lady of several musical talents who has been in the spotlight since the late 80s. Being the proud owner of eight wonderful albums and several awards, she still enjoys the same super-star status that she got after her first release twenty years ago.

During her graduation years at Tufts University, she became fascinated with folk-rock and began performing her own songs at coffeehouses and the streets surrounding Harvard Square.

Excited enough to get in to the music world, she recorded a set of demos at the college radio station. This was followed by several efforts to make it big and after a couple of deals; she realized her dreams and was signed by Elektra in 1987. After this, Chapman started working on her debut album and as they say the rest is history.

Tracys very first venture made her the force to reckon with. Her self-titled debut album got multi-platinum success and earned her name, fame and awards. Tracy Chapman announced the coming of the new star and this extremely wonderful album witnessed such astounding success that is still quite rare for any debutant. Released in 1988, the album hit #1 spot on both sides of the Atlantic and sold over 6,000,000 copies in the US alone.

This has also earned her a sincere fan base that is only growing with the passage of time. The album was ornamented with absolute musical gems like Fast Car, TalkinBout A Revolution and Across the Lines. Fast Car is her most successful single that peaked at number six and won her the Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

But this was not the only Grammy that she got as she also won the prestigious award for Best New Artist and Best Contemporary Folk Album for the same album. Her fabulous debut also got her SKC Boston Music Awards for Rock Album 1988 and Top song 1988.

Tracys second venture Crossroads was released in 1989. This was a well-reviewed album with darker and more political theme. All ten songs of the album proved her perfection over the craft of singing and songwriting. Tracks like All That You Have Is Your Soul, Freedom Now, Subcity and Born to Fight became hit with her fans and also made her the winner of the two Brit Awards for International Female and International Breakthrough Act in 1989.

Tracy Chapman opened her Matters Of The Heart in the year 1992. The album was greeted with mixed reviews and did not proved as good in sales as her first two outings. Although her fans thoroughly enjoy songs like Bang Bang Bang and If These Are the Things but critics hinted at her downfall. However, Tracy has got the talent and courage needed to rise from the ashes and soon she started her New Beginning in the world of music.

Tracy Chapmans 1995 offering New Beginning proved true to its name and heralded her second innings thanks to the Top Ten single Give Me One Reason. With this single, the album entered into the U.S. Top Ten in early 1996 marking the successful comeback of this awesome artist. It also earned her one more Grammy and three nominations including the one for Best Pop Album.

Tracy also swept the 20th Annual Bay Area Music Awards in San Francisco where she won Bammies for Best Album, Best Female Vocalist, Musician of the Year and Outstanding Song for Give Me One Reason.Tracy Chapman opened the 2000 with Telling Stories that marked her comforting consistency with beautiful tunes like First Try and Its OK. This was followed by a 2002 release Let It Rain that contained twelve beautifully written and intelligent songs including Youre the One, Hard Wired, Happy and Say Hallelujah. Where You Live came in 2005 that hit the jackpot with eleven original compositions, including the super hit deep-felt single Change.

Tracys latest treat is Our Bright Future that is her eighth album till date. Released in late 2008, the album briefly looks back at the way music has shaped her life. From an upbeat opening track Sing For You to the more though provoking Something To See (No More War), the album rightly projects the variety this singer has to offer to the listeners.

Other interesting tracks of the album include I Did It All, Thinking Of You, For A Dream and The Last Person on Earth. In twenty years of her happening career, Tracy Chapman has produced many wonderful and unforgettable songs. While her Best-of album was released in 2001 that sold more than 350,000 copies in the UK alone, she gave a plethora of super-hit songs even after that. She is still going very strong and that is evident from the success of her live tours.

When Tracy set out on the road for the first time many years ago, she appeared as a supporting act of 10,000 Maniacs, but within a few months, the world saw her playing at the internationally televised concert for Nelson Mandelas 70th birthday party.

This is what we call instant karma. From her 1988 act headlining act at Amnesty Internationals global Human Rights Now! Tour along with Bruce Springsteen, Peter Gabriel and Sting, to the most recent European solo winter tour in Brussels, Belgium; she has always earned accolades and praise from the world over.

Tracy Chapman is no doubt a rare artist whose lyric and musical vision has lightened up the music world for the past many years.
