Produced by Des McAnuff and Pete Townshend, Tommy is a play which takes its basis from the album of the same name by The Who, which was released in the year 1969. This was a rock opera. The album also contained material composed by Pete Townshend. In addition to that, Boy Williamson, Keith Moon and John Entwistle also made contributions to the double record. The book, lyrics and music of the play have been composed by Townshend as well.

The story of the play revolves around a boy named Tommy Walker. As a child, he witnessed a horrific incident which deprived him of his speech, hearing and sight. He is now lost to life. That is, until he discovers a brilliant skill for pinball. He is suddenly able to talk, hear and see. This turns him into a living miracle overnight. People now turn towards him to get enlightened. The play was shown for the first time on the 1^st of July, 1992 in San Diego at the La Jolla Playhouse. It then went on to be debuted at Broadway on the 22^nd of April of the following year at the St. James Theatre. It performed for eight hundred and ninety nine shows and gave twenty seven previews before closing on the 17^th of June, 1995. The choreographer of the play was Wayne Cilento, with Des McAnuff being the director. The cast of the musical included several extremely talented actors such as Cheryl Freeman, who played the role of the Acid Queen/The Gypsy; Jonathan Dokuchitz, who played the character of Captain Walker, Marcia Mitzman, who was Mrs.Walker in the play and Michael Cerveris, who played the lead role of Tommy.

In addition to that, the musical also included an ensemble of other artists such as Sherie Rene Scott, Michael Gardner, Tracy Nicole Chapman, Paul Kandel, Norm Lewis, Christian Hoff and Alice Ripley. After the success of the play, it was consequently produced countless times again by different touring organizations in Europe and North America. On the 13^th of July, 1993, RCA Victor released a recording of the original cast which was produced earlier.

A company called Data East got their inspiration from the musical and produced a pinball machine which they named "The Who's Tommy Pinball Wizard." It was released in the year 1994. The machine used artwork, sound effects and music which took its basis from the initial Broadway production of the play.

On the 1^st of March, 1995, a Canadian version of Tommy was also shown. It also went on to become a big hit and was shown for a whole year. The cast of the play was entirely Canadian. Tyley Ross played the lead role of Tommy in this production. After the end of the Toronto run, the musical went on a tour all over Canada, performing at numerous different cities. The West End also released a production of the play in the year 1996. This version featured Kim Wilde as Mrs. Walker and Paul Keating in the lead character of Tommy.
