This nineteenth century Tchaikovsky-Petipa crown jewel has had many productions over the years including those by the Moscow Ballet, New York City Ballet, Richmond Ballet, California Ballet and The Nureyev State Ballet among which the latter two are soon staging some of their most magnificent performances yet again. The enchanting story centers on the beautiful Princess Aurora who is cursed to sleep by the jealous evil Carabosse. She is eventually brought out of her sleep by the handsome Prince Desire. The Sleeping Beauty Ballet tickets are an essential among ballet fans that enjoy the finesse of classical elements.
The Sleeping Beauty Ballet had its world premiere in January 1890 at St. Petersburg's Imperial Mariinsky Theatre with Conductor Riccardo Drigo and Ballet Master Marius Petipa. When it was first played, Tchaikovsky's score for The Sleeping Beauty Ballet was praised by his friend and critic Herman Laroche who noted that the music's internal structure was undoubtedly Russian. Its most notable productions since then include Giorgia Saracco's 1896 Milan performance; Alhambra Theatre's 1921 London show; The Royal Ballet's 1946 staging at London's Royal Opera House; London Festival Ballet's performance at London's Royal Festival Hall; and Basel Theater Basel's 1992 production revised by Youri Vamos with a slightly different musical number incorporating Petipa's main set pieces. The latter version has been staged by various ballet companies in Central Europe in the last twenty years.
California Ballet is staging another production of the fairytale at the San Diego Civic Theatre where its first performance was mounted in March 2005. It was staged after Petipa's original performance by director Maxine Mahone, featuring Berline Ballet's Polina Semionova as Princess Aurora and Royal Ballet's David Makhateli as Prince Desire. Also included was Guest Artist Evgeniy Lushkin, previously a dancer at the American Ballet Theatre, who played the Bluebird. This role of the Bluebird gained popularity from the original production when it was played by legendary teacher/dancer Enrico Cecchetti. The performance has come to be recognized as 'unabashedly romantic' with Aurora's portrayal described as 'the vision of youthful beauty'. California Ballet was founded in 1968 and has since been re-staging challenging classics while helping the emergence of young choreographers, among which several are from San Diego. It has influenced, enriched and nurtured the lives of many committed dancers alongside that are now performing across four continents.
The Nureyev State Ballet Theatre, based in the city of Ufa, is also staging the magical tale under artistic director Leonora Kuvatova and general director Rustem Sabitov. The Ballet is counted among the youngest of Russian theatres and is well-known for maintaining ballet traditions begun by the company's luminaries, such as the spirituality of dance and the intensity of image penetration. Among its accomplished dancers are Prize-winning contestants of Russian as well as international competitions. Throughout the years, some of the most prominent dancers have performed on their stage including artists from Mariinsky and Bolshoi Theatres, dancers from Germany, Argentina, Brazil, France, Spain, Italy, Latvia, Japan, USA, and Belgium. Dancers from various internationally recognized companies have also joined their stage including those from Russian Ballet, Grogorovich Ballet, the Tchaikovsky Ballet Theatre, Mariinsky Ballet, Cairo Ballet and Bolshoi Ballet among many more. Nureyev State Ballet's upcoming show features dancers that have earlier performed their respective Sleeping Beauty characters in different productions while the artistic director Kuvatova herself has previously danced the part of Aurora. These artists include Prima Ballerina Guzel Suleymanova; principal dancers Andrey Bryntsev, Elena Fomina, Ilnur Gayfullin, Ildar Manyappov, Dmitri Marasanov, Irina Sapozhnikova, and Rimma Zakirova.
