The multiple award-winning author David Auburn once again brings a unique and captivating storyline for the audience in his upcoming play The Columnist. Auburn's first full-length play Skyscraper was performed in 1997, however he received critical as well as commercial success through his 2000 production, Proof. The play won numerous nominations and accolades. Proof was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama as well as Tony Award in the category of 'Best Play.' Apart from stage productions, Auburn has also written screenplay for the movie, 'The Lake House'. The film 'The Girl in the Park' was Auburn's directorial debut and managed to earn praises for the playwright. The Columnist is a fresh work by the author and involves a riveting cast along with an enthralling plot. The play will open at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre during the first quarter of 2012. Acquiring The Columnist tickets will allow audience to experience another alluring production by David Auburn in collaboration with Daniel Sullivan as the director. The duet will once again collaborate to deliver a power packed theatre production after their successful combo in Proof managed to sway the audiences.

The Columnist produced by Manhattan Theatre Club (MTC) will open at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre that acts as a home for the MTC productions. The MTC has been producing some renowned plays since its inception in 1970. Notable productions at the MTC include 'Ruined,' 'Translations,' 'Doubt,' 'Proof,' and 'Crimes of the Heart.' The Samuel J. Friedman Theatre was earlier known as Biltmore Theatre and was later changed to the current name after MTC acquired the Broadway venue. The Columnists will conduct a world premiere at the multi-purpose facility that will provide the precise requirement for an entertaining opening of the highly anticipated show.

The Columnist is based on the American political drama during the mid-century when columnists are 'kings.' The protagonist Joseph Alsop finds himself among the midst of extreme drama during the changing times in the Washington political scene as the 1960's arise. Alsop centers the Washington political world and is cherished, feared as well as courted consistently. The immense drama starts to become deeply rooted in Alsop's personal life. A dominant cast starring 'John Lithgow' in the title role as Joseph Alsop will complement the influential plot. The two-time Tony Award winner will make yet another Broadway appearance after his award winning performances in 'The Changing Room' and 'Sweet Smell of Success.' Lithgow has displayed immense skills and acting talent and consistently won numerous nominations and accolades for his high impact performances whether be it a comical performance  in '3rd Rock from the Sun' or for intense drama in 'Dexter.' The actor is a recipient of five Emmy Awards and two Golden Globe Awards. His TV appearances including the highly praised comical role in '3rd Rock From the Sun' won him three Emmy Awards and his role as a serial killer in the renowned show Dexter lead him to a Golden Globe as well as an Emmy Award for 'Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series' in 2009. Apart from this, the highly acclaimed actor is also famous for his earlier film role in 'The World According to Garp,' and 'Terms of Endearment,' that led him to an Academy Award nomination for 'Best Supporting Actor' in 1983 and 1984.

With the experience and maturity of John Lithgow and the successful collaboration of Auburn and Sullivan, the critics are already betting on The Columnist to deliver one of the greatest performances of this year. The play is being highly anticipated before it opens at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre, home theatre of Manhattan Theatre Club, which has already seen various notable productions at work. The MTC has won several awards for its productions including six Pulitzer Awards, fifteen Tony Awards and twenty-nine Drama Desk Awards. Auburn and Sullivan will be coming together after their previous successful venture Proof that won the Tony Award for the 'Best Play' in 2001. The Columnist along with its high profile star cast will bring maturity and experience on the stage to display the highly intense plot set in the mid-century America.
