The Monterey Pop Festival in June 1967 was a key part of the schedule, which featured some of the leading socially progressive musical artists of the time. It is estimated that an average of just under fifty thousand people attended the multi day event. This included the famous British hard rockers, The Who( the god fathers of psychedelic rock), Grateful Dead (the revolutionary progressive rock outfit), The Jimi Hendrix Experience as well other future rock legends like Jefferson Airplane, Otis Redding, The Byrds, and the Animal.
 
Another important part of this saga was the song San Francisco that was written to promote the Monterey Pop Festival. Ironically it became a massive commercial hit, topped out at number four the U.S. charts and was at the very top of the UK charts. To this day the song is the quintessence symbol of the hippie and the Summer of Love movement of late sixties in particular and the San Francisco's cultural legacy in general. Summer of Love is an effort that recounts the story of a young woman Holly, who travels to San Francisco to experience and be a part of something that she hopes, is bigger than herself. In fact, she arrives on the scene, having run away from her own wedding, essentially rebelling against the status quo. She has a longing to experiment with something different and unconventional; in essence she wants to experience her own Summer of Love. As she wanders through the sea of people populating the Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, she realizes that the event has a different meaning for every individual.  They are all trying to internalize the experience and reflect on it, ultimately deciding what it means for their lives.  Holly eventually finds what she was looking for and learns to make her own kind of music.
