Theatre is an age old tradition in the US and a number of old and respected theatre companies still operate in the country. One of these legendary theatre troupes is the Studio Players. This theatre company was formed in 1952 in the city of Lexington. While two theatres already existed in the city, there was a general perception that enough of the town's theatrical talent was not being utilized. This is when Studio Players was formed. Their first performance area was loaned to them by a local ballet company owner. Their first stage was constructed by converting dressing rooms and their first auditorium was made out of the ballet practice area.
The theatre put up its first production in 1953 and successfully mounted shows for two years before they had to become a roaming theatre. The space was not sufficient for use as a dual venue so the company put on shows wherever they could get a chance for the next few years. They would carry out rehearsals at cast member's houses and the costs of production were immense. Since they had no space to store their sets and scenery, they had to build the sets every time they put on a production. The costs of production started to climb and profits started to dwindle.
It was in 1957 that the company put in a request with the government for allocation of a local building to build a 'little theatre'. This request was approved and work started on renovating a local building. The theatre put up its first production in 1959. They have been performing at the same theatre since then. The building also went through major renovations in 1994. It was finally brought up to date with modern theatres after all the latest amenities were installed. It now stands in a perfect state with all the older building parts and furniture replaced.
Ever since its inception, Studio Players has been a non-profit, volunteer company. This means that none of the artists or technical workers accept pay and only work for the betterment of theatre. They work there because they enjoy the art of theatre and respect the history of Studio Players. No production is put up for commercial reasons. The artists do not have to pander to commercial whims and the real art of theatre is preserved. It is also a great place where struggling artists and lovers of the art can show off their talent. A number of artists who have worked with Studio Players have gone on to major careers in theatre.
The plays put on by the 'little theatre' today follow the age-old small theatre production rules. The genres range from comedy to musicals and serious dramas. There are no flashing lights and fog machines. The main attractions of the plays produced by Studio Players are the actors, the script and the dialogue. It is the purest form of theatre where the artists do not have to rely on technology and flashy displays to catch the audience's attention.
Most of the Studio Players productions are adaptations of classic novels or stories. Some of the plays that the Studio Players is currently producing include 'Leading Ladies' by Ken Ludwig, 'And Then There Were None' by Agatha Christie, 'Agnes of God' by John Pielmeier, 'What Would Jesus Pack?' by Ross Carter and 'Vanya & Sonia & Masha & Spike' By Christopher Durang.
A Studio Players performance is the best night out if you're a fan of real theatre and want to be entertained by this classic art form. The ambiance, the performances and the overall experience will please any theatre lover to the core. Make your way over to the Singletary Center for the Arts in Lexington with your Studio Players tickets and be a part of this amazing American tradition.
