The musical is based on the real trial of Scottboro Boys that took place in the 1930s. The trial was an interesting case altogether. This case was based on a group of nine boys who were accused of raping two girls. These nine black teenage boys were commonly known as the Scottboro Boys. Set in the time frame if 1931 at Alabama, the play starts off with a lady waiting for a bus who gets to witness a scene just as the train stops at the station. The scene is built by two girls who accuse nine black boys of raping them as soon as they get off the train. The boys are sent to jail and are eventually sentenced to death as they don't even have a good lawyer to fight their case.
The turning point of the whole story comes into play when the verdict is reversed and they get the opportunity of another trial. In 1933, when the boys are in another jail, Haywood Patterson, one of the nine accused boys shares his personally written story in jail with the others and achieves public support as well. The second trial of the boys also witnesses the statement by one of the girls who says that the boys are not guilty. However, this does not turn out to be the final verdict and instead the Scottboro Boys are subject to another trial.
The story of trials continues and the boys await justice. In the process, Haywood even tries to escape from the jail but is caught accordingly. Their lawyer from New York, Samuel Leibowitz provides the defense case for the boys and appeals the verdict every now then so as to get a fair verdict. By 1937 four boys are released but Haywood still remains in the prison. He keeps on telling the truth to the court but is never set free, in fact as a tragic end his fate lies in remaining in the prison for a lifetime.
The ending to the play is very interesting and it needs your presence to witness what actually happens in the end. The way the story is dramatized as a scene that appears as a flashback to the women waiting for the bus is truly enchanting. This trial is termed as one of the very famous trials of America where the original production team of Kander, Ebb and Thompson thought that this story needed to be told to the public and could be dramatized to create the desired effect in the audience. The story is definitely heart touching and makes the audience knowledge regarding trials as well.
