The New York City Theater has another delight for new and regular theater goers. The musical comedy 'Rugantino' is set in nineteenth century papal Rome and has all the elements needed to keep the audiences laughing throughout the length of the performance. Written and created by Poetro Garinei and Sandro Giovannini, the musical opened in 1962, with orchestra direction by maestro Armando Trovajoli. Straight from performances in Rome, Florence and Milan, Rugantino is now coming to New York to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of its Broadway debut. The cast of the musical includes Italy's most popular comedian Enrico Brignano in the title role along with fifty more actors, singers and dancers. Another notable cast member is Armando Silverini, who has been a part of the musical since its very first edition.
Hand painted sets and stunning costumes will accompany the production to give the audience a real Italian experience. Under the direction of Brignano, the musical promises to be an unforgettable experience for new and regular theater goers alike.
Set in the nineteenth century, the musical showcases the story of a good looking and fun-loving rogue boy, Rugantino. In his self-confidence that he can have any woman he wants, Rugantino decides to seduce the wife of one of the most prominent citizens. In the pursuit of this woman he comes across all sorts of circumstances that as are surprising for him as for the audiences.
Rugantino is the first Italian musical to have gained such immense success on Broadway. After its 1962 debut at Teatro Sistina, the American theater impresario Alexander Cohen decided to take it overseas. Having successfully performed a number of shows in Toronto, the show opened on Broadway in 1964. The first performance starred an incredible lineup of actors and singers, including Nino Manfredi in the lead role along with Aldo Fabrizi, Bice Valori and Ornella Vanoni.
The lineup for this upcoming fiftieth anniversary celebration performance includes, Enrico Brigano as Rugantino, Vincenzo Failla as Mastro Titta, Serena Rossi as Rosetta, Armando Silverini as Banditore/Vegliante/Conte Leopoldo and Paola Tiziana Cruciani as Eusebia. With this talented team of performers, coupled up with the creative production team, the musical promises to be a memorable extravaganza.
The lead actor in the current production, Enrico Brignano is a critically acclaimed comedian and one of the most accomplished artists in theater and in movies. He received proper education and training as a comedian from the Gigi Proietti's Academy for Young Comedians. His first public performance as a comedian came in the first edition of the TV program, "La sai l'utima?" In 1998 and 2000, Enrico appeared in Un medico in famiglia as Giacinto. This was an even bigger TV series and it provided him with valuable experience and public exposure.
In 2000, he also made his debut as a director. Today he is an unavoidable personality in the world of entertainment. One of his recent works, his live show "Sono Romano", has been seen by more than 200,000 people in stadiums all over Italy.
