Based on a story by French literary maestro, Charles Perrault, the story of Cinderella is adored by people all over the world. In 1957, Rodgers and Hammerstein adapted Cinderella into a musical for television that featured Julie Andrews in the lead role. Now, the epic tale returns as a production, both on and off Broadway, with a celebrity cast that includes Carly Rae Jepsen. This production puts a more modern twist on the classic story.
Cinderella, the original 1957 production, followed the popularized storyline of a young girl who lives under the tyranny of her stepmother and stepsisters and finally escapes from that life by finding her prince with the help of a lone glass slipper and her fairy godmother. This televised musical has produced numerous times over the years.
2013 saw the musical being turned into a Broadway show for the first time. The adaptation uses much of the same plot, with slight variations. Ella lives with her stepmother, Madame, and stepsisters, Gabrielle and Charlotte. She often dreams of a better life, as she serves the wishes of Madame and her daughters. While she has nobody in the world to call her own, she has two friends in whom she often confides; Crazy Marie and Jean Michel. Through a series of coincidences, extremely fortunate events and a little help from one of her stepsisters and her fairy godmother, Ella manages to attend the royal ball, loses her glass slipper twice, meets the prince and fixes her life.
Richard Rodgers stands as one of the most accomplished and experienced composers of America. Born in 1902, Rodgers repertory includes work on more than forty Broadway productions and almost a thousand different songs. He has written music for shows such as Jumbo, Babes in Arms, On Your Toes, Me and Juliet, The King and I and the phenomenal The Sound of Music. His partnership with Lorenz Hart and Oscar Hammerstein II proved to be two of the most celebrated pairings that have given Broadway and theatre some of their most groundbreaking and iconic shows. It is no wonder then, that his work has won him numerous accolades such as a Tony Award, and Oscar, a Grammy and an Emmy Award. Apart from that, he has also won the Pulitzer Prize. One of the game changers of the industry, Rodgers gave theater a vast collection of songs that have now become legendary.
Oscar Hammerstein II, was a theatre director, producer and a lyricist. He was the second half of one of showbiz's most commemorated duos. Writing song after song with lyrics set to Rodgers music; Hammerstein created one of the most celebrated repertoires of theater music. He is credited with having written over eight hundred songs. Much of his work has now been classified under the RIAA list of ?Songs of the Century.? His work on shows such as The Sound of Music, The King and I and Show Boat has won him multiple Tony Awards and a couple of Academy Awards. He is often regarded as one of the most influential lyricists of all time, and today, he stands as an inductee of the American Theatre Hall of Fame.
While the reproduction of this musical uses the same music composed by Richard Rodgers and the lyrics penned by Oscar Hammerstein, the book is written by Douglas Carter Beane. Beane joins the team as an established playwright who has worked on plays such as As Bees in Honey Drown, The Little Dog Laughed and To Wong Foo. Winner of a Tony Award for his original screenplay, Beane has become an esteemed writer and is often regarded as the best in the business. This time around, his work on Cinderella allows the musical to retain its charm while making the story more relatable to today. Beane's Cinderella is not a meek character. Instead, she presents a more driven and strong woman who is ready for anything.
This production of Cinderella gives a makeover to the original damsel in distress. Critics are already raving about the show. The Wall Street Journal calls it ?Resplendent,? Entertainment Weekly calls it ?Thrilling,? and Associated Press calls it ?Charming, witty and relevant.? With the same songs and a tweaked storyline, this Tony Award winning musical is a must see.
