Webber proposed Cameron Mackintosh to work on the musical. Despite listening to the early version of the musical by Ken Hill, Webber developed the score that has the operatic style besides maintaining the structure and form of the musical. The preliminary production was staged at Sydmonton in 1985 and it made use of Richard Stilgoe's original lyrics too, although few alterations were later made to the songs. The mask originally designed for the Phantom covered the whole face which was later redesigned thus covering half of the face to give ease to the actor especially in vision and voice.
 
The Phantom of Opera came to Her Majesty's Theatre in London's West End under the direction of Hal Prince in 1986. Michael Crawford played the role of Phantom and the production is still produced at Her Majesty's celebrating its 24th anniversary in 2010. The 10,000th performance was stage at the matinee with Lloyd Webber and Michael Crawford gracing the occasion with their presence. After the successful hit in West End, the production began in Broadway the very next year thus keeping the same cast for the lead role.
 
The production has undergone an editing task in order to give a new look to the musical, thus it was renamed as Phantom- The Las Vegas Spectacular in 2006. Phantom is now performed at The Venetian Resort Hotel Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada in a purpose built theatre in order to give the resonance of Opera Garnier in Paris. Without the intermission the production runs continuously for 95 minutes. The production is still presented by the original choreographer and director Harold Prince and Gillian Lynne. With much advanced pyrotechnics and lighting effects, the stage truly suffice the needs of the production, even the transition from the present performance to 1880's heyday is not a big deal in The Venetian. Almost 45 minutes of spoken lines from the libretto and dance sequels have been deducted from the performance which highlights the Phantom's character and does not disturb most of the musical numbers. The all times favorite musicals Poor Fool, He Makes Me Laugh and The Point of No Return are still intact and they glorify the beauty of the production too.
