Next to Normal is a rock musical adapted from a very famous book of the same name written by famous writer Brian Yorkey, lyrics for the play were also written by Yorkey and the music was composed by Tom Kitt. Directions for Next to Normal were given by award winning director Michael Greif, who also directed a hit Pulitzer Prize winning musical Rent in 1996. After Rent, Next to Normal became the eighth musical play in history to win a Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2010. The Pulitzer Board that gave the award termed Next to Normal as "a powerful musical that grapples with mental illness in a suburban family and expands the scope of subject matter for musicals." This musical also won Tony Awards for Best Orchestration, Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical and Best Original Score. The story of the musical primarily revolves around a struggling mother who happens to have deteriorating brain disease called bipolar disorder and they way she fights for the survival of family and herself, and how the illness disturbs all her household. Next to Normal also delicately touches other social issues like modern psychiatry ethics, suburban lifestyles, grieving over the loss of loved ones, drugs and even suicide.

Initial working on Next to Normal was started in 1998 with regular workshops and readings till 2007. In 2005 the musical was staged at the New York Musical Theater Festival and immediately got noticed by David Stone a famous producer. Off-Broadway production of the musical was run at the Second Stage Theater, with direction by Grief and musical staging by Sergio Trujillo. In 2008 a rewritten version of musical was staged in Virginia at Arena Stage. Next to Normal finally opened its Broadway doors for the audience in April 2009, plans were to stage it at the Longacre Theater but the very stylish Booth Theater was selected instead. The play received good reviews and it was rated among the Ten Best of the Year list of 2009 of "Curtain Up". Famous music magazine Rolling Stone called the play "The Best Musical of the season- by a mile." The Broadway production of this exciting musical ended with an amazing 733 regular performances and 21 previews in January 2011.

Next to Normal went on a US tour in 2010 starting from Ahmanson Theater in city of Los Angeles California, this tour will be going to 16 different cities in US and also in Canadian cities like Ontario Toronto, the tour will end somewhere in 2011. In September 2010 the first ever non-English version of Next to Normal opened in Norway at the Det Norske Teatret. The show will soon be premiering in other countries like Australia, Finland and Philippines. The Asian premiere in Manila will be staged by the famous Atlantis Productions Inc at the very spacious Romulo Auditorium in Metro Manila Philippines.
