As far as her personal information is concerned Maria Callas, the American born soprano having a Greek Decent was without a doubt among the most celebrated opera singers of the twentieth century. Her voice had a wide range with great dramatic gifts. Being an extremely versatile singer she was loved by her fans and detested by her contemporaries. Her remarkable music and talent and flare for drama led her to be hailed as the La Divina. Turning from a heavy woman into a slender, glamorous one might have contributed to her vocal decline leading to a sudden unforeseen end to her thriving career. Throughout her career she felt strongly against the press that did everything possible to bring to surface her negative points, such as her temperamental behavior. The song bird was also heavily criticized for her alleged rivalry with Reneta Tebaldi. The press also never left an occasion to scrutinize her love affair with Aristotle Onassis. In light of all this it does not come as a surprise when we come to know that her tragic life overshadowed her singing talents in the popular press. Nevertheless she has been hailed as "The Bible of Opera" by Leonard Bernstein.
Best Known for her role in TV's Cagney and Lacey Tyne Daly played Maria Callas in the play. She is the proud winner of a Tony Award prior to receiving one for Master Class.
