Little House on the Prairie is a musical based on the books of Laura Ingalls Wilder, who is among the top, yet most appreciated American writers of the 20th century. It is produced by many producers (and also associate producers) including Ben Sprecher, Amy Sprecher and Bob Boyett. The book of the musical is written by Rachel Sheinkin, and the musical is composed by Rachel Portman; whereas, the lyrics have been done by Donna di Novelli. Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote the books basing it on her own life story, when she settled with her family in DeSmet, South Dakota, USA during the late 19th century. published in 1935, Little House on the Prairie way such a success that the author also turned it into a series of books, known as the Little House series, and people from all around the world, especially in the western countries, highly praised them. This paved the way for many television series that got inspired by the book. The first one form these was a UK production, called Jackanory, which started in the latter half of the 1960s. Then came another television series in, however, it was a loose adaptation of the Little House on the Prairie books. The name of this production was the same as the books' - Little House on the Prairie, and it aired from 1974 to 1984, on the NBC network. The books were also quite a success in the Asian world that is why they inspired a Japanese cartoon series of 26 episodes as well, called Sogen no shojo Laura (Laura, The Prairie Girl). In 2001, 2002 two movies were made for television, called Beyond the Prairie. Then in 2005 were aired the television miniseries - Little House on the Prairie, and had six episodes.

Three years later, in 2008, premiered a staged version of the books of Laura at the Guthrie Theater, located in Minnesota, USA. The musical incorporated the exact same name - Little House on the Prairie and it opened on August 15 and ran through October 19, 2008. Melissa Gilbert, who had played the character of 'Laura' in the much-loved television series for 10 years, is now playing 'Ma' in the musical.

The basic plot of the theatrical is the same as its story line - the journey of the Ingalls family westward and settlement in DeSmet, South Dakota, where Ma and Pa Ingalls hoped to make a better life for their children. The story of their struggle to keep their land claim is put in the picture. The hardships faced by the family under the big blue sky in changing weathers, along with disasters like prairie fires, and also rejoicing in the settlement of land and town, all is very well depicted in the musical. However, the basic storyline revolves around 'Laura' who learns many lessons while growing up, and how she transforms from a young free child into a responsible grownup woman. On the whole, the story celebrates the core values on which the country was established.
