Following an acclaimed Off-Broadway run, Ryan Scott Oliver and Hunter Foster's, “Jasper in Deadland” is all set to make its debut at the Seattle's 5th Avenue Theatre. A new musical, it centers on 17-year old Jasper as he takes a trip into the afterlife to save his best friend. The musical features a high-octane score by the award winning duo, Oliver and Foster, and leaves the audience wondering about death and the true meaning of life. A heart-throbbing rock musical, it has all the makings to become a theatre phenomenon. The show will be running at the 5th Avenue Theatre for a limited engagement, so it's best to buy Jasper in Deadland tickets right away.
Loosely based on the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, “Jasper in Deadland” follows Jasper, an intelligent teenager, high school swimmer and heartthrob of many. He is stuck in the middle of his self-absorbed parents who are filing for divorce. The story moves forward when Jasper jumps off a cliff into a lake to save his best friend and love interest Agnes, who leapt into the water to prove something to Jasper. The senseless act killed Agnes but unaware Jasper enters into the Deadland to rescue her. The audience journeys with Jasper as he moves among the dead and finds out that Agnes has become a lost soul. She's on a voyage to “Elysium Delirium Destination”, that is Paradise. Looking to find his way back, he needs help from a higher place and ends up meeting Cerberus.
Deadland's three-headed hellhound, he talks to Jasper about life and its true meaning, and hence starts an exciting journey. As he travels through Deadland, Jasper encounters vicious heart-chomping demons, along with factory drones who are damned for all eternity. With the help of a tour guide named Gretchen, Jasper meets some interesting characters. Audience is kept at the edge of their seats as Jasper has to return to the Earth soon as time is ticking. In the process he has to confront several villains who include a scheming multi-zillionaire Mr. Lethe and a hilarious pair of Norse goddesses. Will Jasper be able to bring his love back from the dead, or he will join the dead himself? You must watch the musical to find out.
Jasper in Deadland owes its success to some superb writing, incredible songs and wonderful acting. But the real rock star of the musical is its director, Brandon Ivie. His creative stage direction on a low budget is worth a lot of praise. His stagecraft is sparse and fresh and scenes move forward quite fluidly. Ivie's clever use of a modest set has blended perfectly with Herrick Goldman's spectacular lighting effects. Elizabeth Ostler who is the puppet designer, has created the disturbing Cerberus that leaves a huge impact on the audience. Composer Ryan Scott Oliver has come up with catchy tunes that are rich in melodies and have great harmonies. Some of the songs that earned acclaim are “The Killing”, “Lifesong” and “Awful People”.
All those who are looking for some good clean fun must buy Jasper in Deadland tickets and watch the musical at the 5th Avenue Theatre. It will take you back to your high school years, when all you wanted was to escape the real world and be in someone's protective arms.
