How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying is a musical satiric masterpiece. The story is based on J. Pierpont Finch, a young and ambitious window cleaner of a big company building. Act I begin when he gets hold of a book called How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying and believes that he can make a huge success in corporate world. He comes across Rosemary Pilkington, who works as a secretary and gets impressed with Flinch and offers to help him in meeting Mr. Bratt, the personnel manager of the company. Finch gets a job to work in the mailroom. There he gets to work with Mr. J.B. Biggley's (company's president) extremely lazy and favoritism loving nephew Bud Frump. The mailroom head develops a liking for Flinch and teaches him The Company Ways. The head of the mailroom vacancy opens, but as written in the book, Flinch knows that he shouldn't spend any more time in the mailroom. He gives up the position to Bud Frump, who gratefully accepts it. Bratt gets impressed by Flinch and gives him junior executive position in the Plans and Systems department. Finch is told to remain in the office on Saturdays by Biggley. Finch instead goes on a date with Rosemary and next day arrives in the office early, pretending that he is seriously tired and has been there all night. When Biggley arrives, he finds Finch asleep in the chair. Biggley makes Finch the Vice-President of the Advertising department, just before the grand meeting that is to be held in two days.

Act II opens on the morning when the great meeting is to take place. Rosemary feels seriously neglected by Flinch as he is preparing for the meeting. She makes up her mind to break up, but the other secretaries motivate her not to do so, as all of them have the dream of marrying the Vice-President. But she herself does not long for Flinch's Presidency, but his time and attention. As the book tells him, being the Vice President, he needs to have a big innovative idea. Frump sarcastically makes fun of him by telling him he should play treasure hunt. Flinch finds inspiration in the idea and creates a program in which he hides particular amount of company's shares in the 10 offices of the company throughout the country. The audience will be given hints about the location through the TV show. He says that the hints will be given on air by none other than the beautiful Heddy. He tells Heddy about the location the night before going on air. During the program, Heddy is made to swear upon the Bible that she does not know anything about the hidden shares location. Heddy panics and gives away everything live on the TV. Treasure hunters break into the company's offices, thus ending Flinch's idea into a big disaster.

In Flinch's book, it's clearly mentioned that if you hit a disaster, you should probably return to the first chapter of the book How to Get a Job. He decides that probably he should return to window cleaning. However things end up in his favor and he is made the Chairman while Biggley remains the president. Womper, the ex chairman resigns and marries Heddy and Frump falls down to the window cleaning job. The show ends with the whole company bidding the audience farewell.
