Hansel and Gretel is an opera that was composed by Engelbert Humperdinck durin 1891 and 1892. This fairy-tale opera was based on the libretto by Humperdinck’s sister Adelheid Wette adapted from Hansel and Gretel by Grimm Brothers. The whole opera has a folk theme which is much appreciated by the audience. The idea of the musical was given by Humperdinck’s sister who wrote several lyrics for her children and wanted them to be turned into music. After lots of revisions and changes, Humperdinck finally piled up and composed all the right lyrics with right music and created Hansel and Gretel the opera in Frankfurt am Main.
Engelbert Humperdinck was a composer from Germany during late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. At the age of seven Humperdinck composed his very first composition on piano. He wrote his first two musicals at the age of thirteen. Although his parents never approved his dream of making a career in music, he managed to pursue his aims. Hansel and Gretel, the opera that he composed during 1890’s is his most famous play. Some other of his contributions to the German stage include; “The Seven Little Kids”, “King’s Children”, “Sleeping Beauty”, “The Christmas Dream”, “The Provisioner” and “Scenes from German Student Life”.
Hansel and Gretel was premiered on 23rd of December 1893 in Weimer under the direction of Richard Strauss. Richard Strauss declared Hansel and Gretel as a musical masterpiece of a high quality. With the touch of folk music, the opera was an instant hit. The very next year another of its production was premiered at Hamburg and was conducted by Gustav Mahler. The first production that was staged outside Germany was in November of 1894 at Basel, Switzerland. The opera was introduced in Australian theatre on 6th of April 1907 at “Princess’s Theater”, Melbourne.
“Royal Opera Hall” staged Hansel and Gretel in 1923 and broadcasted it as the first radio opera ever. In 1931, Hansel and Gretel was premiered at “Metropolitan Opera” in New York. Till the date, Hansel Gretel remains a favorite worldwide. The Metropolitan Opera production of the opera is considered the most colorful one. The translated version of it was written by Norman Kelley, the producers were Nathaniel Merrill and Robert O’Hearn. Children and adults both pour into the theatres as Hansel and Gretel is performed.
