Fish in the Dark is a comedy play that will soon make its debut on Broadway and is definitely going to be unlike anything that has ever graced the theatre. The main reason for that is the writer, creator and lead actor of the show is Larry David. Larry is a man who has been in the industry for over two decades, winning Emmy Awards and accolades for his work in television. He has never stepped on stage, so this will be the veteran TV writer's first ever foray into theatre.
If the name Larry David sounds familiar, it's because he was the creator and writer of one of the most influential and popular TV comedy shows of all time, Seinfeld. It was the show that gave birth to the star Jerry Seinfeld and is currently in rotation on television in over a 100 countries with billions of people having seen the show at one time or the other. Once Larry struck TV gold with Seinfeld, he went on to a very successful stand-up career before creating and starring in Curb Your Enthusiasm in 2000. Like his first show, Curb was a massive success and went on for more than 10 seasons before Larry finally decided to throw in the towel and take his talents to a different medium.
Fans of Curb Your Enthusiasm will find much humor in the fact that Larry has famously complained about his decision to star on Broadway. In interviews given about Fish in the Dark, Larry has exclaimed that much like a popular storyline in his TV shows, he regrets his decision to take to the stage. Vocal coaching is hell, acting is not his specialty and he'd rather talk to the audience than other actors on the stage. Even though this should dissuade people from watching the show, it actually has the opposite effect on people. Seeing Larry saying he doesn't want to do something just makes whatever he is doing more interesting.
Considering Larry's experience with the pen, there is no doubt that his Broadway debut is going to be one of the funniest theatre comedies in recent history. The story follows a family that is trying to cope with a death and Larry's signature observational and sarcastic humor takes the center stage. His carefully crafted characters are played by stage veterans like Rosie Perez, Jonny Orsini, Jayne Houdyshell, Jake Cannavale, Jerry Adler, Rita Wilson, Ben Shenkman, Marylouise Burke, Lewis J. Stadlen and Jenn Lyon. The talented cast will be helmed by the acclaimed director Anna D. Shapiro, who has won a Tony Award, Outer Critics Circle Award and Drama Desk Award for "Outstanding Director of a Play". Fish in the Dark will be her third Broadway presentation.
The show will be making its debut in March 2015 at the Cort Theatre on Broadway with previews running in early February. The Cort Theatre has a capacity for 1,082 patrons and has been designated a New York City Landmark, adding to the mystique and cultural feel of the show. This is the same theatre that put on director Anna D. Shapiros' last play "This is Our Youth", which means that the director will find it easier to settle in and will have better control over how everything works. The stage will be set by the famous Tony Award and Laurence Olivier Award winning set designer Todd Rosenthal, who has a number of Broadway shows to his credit already.
Whether you're a fan of Larry's off-beat humor or just want to see how a Broadway debut pans out for this much loved comic, make sure your get your Fish in the Dark tickets. They are bound to fly off the shelves once they go on sale.
