Ernani is a lyric opera by the famous opera composer of 80's Giuseppe Verdi. Verdi's opera was based on Francesco Maria Piave's libretto which was based on Victor Hugo's play "Hermani". Giusseppe Francesco Verdi was a romantic opera composer from Italy. He was among the top opera composers of the 19th century. His works are still performed frequently at opera houses around the globe. Some of Verdi's works are deeply interwoven in the culture of his time. Verdi's initial success came with "Oberto" in 1839.After that Bartolomeo Merelli hired him on a contract for two more works. While he was working on his second opera, his wife fell very ill and died. Due to grief, Verdi couldn't pay much attention to his work and it ended as a failure for him. Despaired, Verdi vowed that he will never attempt a musical again. However, Merelli managed to convince him into giving it one more go. That was when Verdi composed "Nabucco", which turned out as a great success and made Verdi famous.
After the original performance, Ernani was staged in London, UK at "Her Majesty's Theatre" in March 1845. The US production was staged two years later in April 1847 In New York. Ernani had appeared on "Metropolitan Opera's" roster 88 times till 2008. Although the opera wasn't much heard of after Verdi's death, it was revived during 1980's and several other productions were brought to the theatres across the globe. Some of the later productions include; 1982's "Sans Francisco Opera", "La Scala" 1984 and "the Met" 1985. In 2008 Ernani was performed by "Opera Boston". The opera takes us from rebel camp to elegant Spanish palace, from a Moorish caste to royal catacombs. The costumes are intriguingly colorful and the sets are inspired from the paintings of Titian. The Italian operas of the era were always abstract in nature and did not follow any day to day stories. Most of them just provided a good show of moments intertwined.
