The highly acclaimed and raved musical is heading out on a much-awaited tour, so purchase your Come From Away tickets as soon as you can. This tour will take the emotionally charged music drama to several cities including Austin, Dallas, Kansas City, Tucson, Sacramento, and many more places.
A Brief History Of The Play
This musical, which was directed by Christopher Ashley and written by Irene Snakoff and David Hein, made its debut in 2012 at Ontario’s Oakville College. It was then shifted to Broadway in 2017 after having successful runs in Washington, Seattle, and Toronto. Hein and Snakoff had not aspired to take the musical to Broadway – they had plans of writing this play for high school students to perform. The husband and wide duo visited the island of Newfoundland on the tenth anniversary of 9/11 and came to know about the compassion of the town’s residents. The couple felt that the world needed to hear about these narratives and eventually penned down this feel-good musical to show the world the ‘other’ side of humanity.
Playing Host To The World In The Darkest Of Times
This play is based on real incidents; the heartfelt musical takes the spectators back in time when an unfortunate terrorist attack shook the world and left millions of travelers stranded. After the 9/11 attacks, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) decided to shut down its airspace due to security reasons. As a result, many planes made emergency landings and some were directed to land in an isolated town of Gander. Soon, around 7,000 passengers found themselves stranded on Gander airport.
The Local Community Swings Into Action
What followed was an incredible display of human emotions, gratitude, kindness, and unmatched hospitality – despite the cultural barriers and language differences, the people of the town welcomed the unexpected guests with open arms. The residents prepared every church, community hall, gym, and school as an emergency accommodation for the travelers and sent them home-cooked meals. The bewildered passengers found themselves at ease when they saw the townspeople doing so much for them.
Critical Acclaim
The production received glowing reviews from all sides and has won an Olivier Award. This New York Times Critic’s Pick is also the recipient of 9 Drama Desk Awards and 8 Tony Awards. Herald Sun has commented that this touching musical is “A hit and a masterpiece! Joyous, uplifting, and plenty of humor.” TimeOut also had positive things to say about the production and called it “A totally soulfeedingly wonderful musical.” With its beautiful story based on remarkable true events, this musical drama will surely push some emotional buttons and will restore your faith in humanity.
