Cirque du Soleil meaning Circus of the Sun was founded in 1984 by Guy Laliberte, along with a couple of friends. As self described, Cirque is a dramatic mixture of circus arts and street entertainment. Unlike other circuses, Cirque du Soleil does not have acting animals; it's a contemporary circus. The eight things, labeled as the eight sides of Cirque du Soleil's universe are; Acting, Acrobatic Performances, Art Forms From Around the World, Imaginary Worlds, Dance, Daring, Dexterity and Grace. Each performance is a compilation of various circus acts from different parts of the world, with a theme and a central idea. The audience is enchanted through live music, dances, incredible costumes, astounding lightening effects, fantasy, imagination and daring acrobatic performances.
After the financial failures and losses throughout 1980, the show Nouvelle Experience was formed and was directed by Franco Dragone. The show brought great success to Cirque du Soleil, giving it profit and a chance to create more shows. Since then, Cirque du Soleil has expanded rapidly throughout the 1990's and 2000's, rising from one show to 19 various themed shows in 271 countries across every continent with the exception of Antarctica. These shows are run by a team of 4,000 employees from more than 40 countries around the world, generating annual revenue of $810 million. The shows held in Las Vegas alone are attended by about 9000 people each night. To date, Cirque du Soleil's creative creations have won several distinctions and awards. These include, Bambi Award 1997, Rose d'Or Award 1989, Drama Desk Awards 1991 & 1998, three Gemini Awards, four Primetime Emmy Awards and star on Hollywood Walk of Fame
Cirque du Soleil's latest acrobatic rock opera show Zarkana is currently being staged at Radio City Music Hall in New York City and Grand Kremlin Palace at Moscow. Zarkana is a story about a magician Zark who is desperately in love with a woman named Lia. Lia leaves him and with her departure, his magical powers are lost. Abandoned in a deserted theatre, Zark starts his odyssey in search of his lost love and magical powers. There he encounters bizarre and sinister creatures from the surreal world, which are bent on their mission to divert him from his path.
Cirque du Soleil Zarkana, tagged as an irresistibly odd escape, is a magical combo of music, daring acrobatics, perfect lightning effects and perfect contrast of colors, giving a whole fantasy air to it. The artistic stage is designed with an arch entirely made of snakes and at a point the whole stage is covered with spider webs, there the led wall displays a sea of upside down umbrellas. But once the team of acrobats, flyers, dancers, high-wire balancers and aerialists board the stage, everything is forgotten. Spectators are spell-bound as they watch the unbelievably amazing and magical performances live. The astounding show of skills and colors keep the viewers on the edge of the seats. Another unusual and ethereal addition to the show is Erika Chen's sand art. The audience is caught in the web of her fantasy art as her delicate fingers form serene pictures in the blue sand. The performance to catch most of the audience' liking is the skill shown by the brothers Ray Navas Velez and Rudy Navas Velez on the Wheel of Death. Wheel of Death is like two sphere cages, hanging opposite to each other, spinning continuously. The two brothers pop in and out of these balls, moving continuously and even skipping role. It is no doubt one of the most dazzling mixture of performances queued in one evening.
Zarkana is written and directed by Francois Girard, known as among Quebec's most respected creators. His creations have gained an international status and fame. In his written works and directions, music plays a significant role. Line Tremblay is the director of creation. She fell in love with Cirque when it was formed. As narrated by herself; she loved the freewheeling spirit of the circus which has never died away. For her, circus is a complete form of art, involving everything, from fantasy, emotions to colors and perspective. Stephane Roy is the set and props designer of Zarkana. Roy has worked in over 100 productions at Montreal and abroad as an artistic and set designer. The dazzlingly magical costumes of Zarkana are designed by the highly talented Alan Hranitelj.
