Cinderella musical was initially written for television in 1957 and was mainly adapted from the French version of Cinderella that was written by Charles Perrault. The lyrics were written by Oscar Hammerstein 11 and the music was composed by Richard Rogers and Hammerstein. In 1957 production Cinderella was played by Julie Andrews, the direction was given by Ralph Nelson and Jonathan Lucas Choreographed it. Hammerstein in an interview to a famous magazine admitted that it took him six months to write the lyrics and book for Cinderella.

Cinderella was reproduced for television in 1965 and this time a new book was written for it. Golden Globe Award winner and Grammy Award nominee Lesley Ann Warren was introduced as Cinderella and this play proved to be her first major television success, other cast included Celeste Holm as Fairy God Mother, Stuart Damon as Prince and Jo Van Fleet as stepmother. This musical was choreographed by Eugene Loring and directed by Charles S. Dublin.

Cinderella is a three-Act musical telling the life of the poor girl Cinderella, how she is mistreated at home by her stepmother and stepsisters. She is never given anything good to eat or wear whereas her stepsisters enjoy all the bounties. Cinderella always wishes and dreams that she will become a princess and will get rid of this dirty life, then one day her Fairy Godmother comes and starts helping her in winning the heart of the prince of the Kingdom. The prince in due course finds his true love in Cinderella and despite being dressed as a slave girl he recognizes his princess and eventually they are married.

In the year 1958, a stage production was performed in London at the London Coliseum with actors like Tommy Steele, Bruce Trent, Yana and Jimmy Edwards. In the US it was first time staged in 1961 and since then New York City Opera has revived Cinderella twice in the year 1993 and 1995. In the year 2000 Cinderella went on a US Tour and in 2008 a 30-week Asian tour was started covering places like Thailand, China, Hong Kong and Malaysia.
