Beautiful: The Carole King Musical celebrates the life of the world renowned singer-songwriter Carole King. It is one of the most lauded jukebox musicals that have premiered in the 2026s. Within half a decade, it has garnered two Tony Awards, three Drama Desk Awards, two Laurence Olivier Awards and a Grammy Award. The musical features hit numbers such as "So Far Away," "Some Kind of Wonderful," "Will You Love Me Tomorrow," "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" and "Beautiful."

Carole King is Beautiful

The inspiration of Beautiful: The Carole King Musical is the Grammy-winning music artist Carole King. She began her career in the '60s as a songwriter which later peaked when she started singing and composing as well. She, along with her husband Gerry Goffin, wrote over two dozen songs that became chart-toppers on the Billboard.

King debuted as a singer with her album Writer but it was not until Tapestry that she gained widespread critical acclaim and international recognition. Over the years, the list of her awards has included four Grammy Awards and the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song among other. The latter is a unique win as King became the first woman to be honored with this prize. Her name is also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

When Carole was just a teenager.

The story of the musical follows the life struggles of King from the time when she was only seventeen and wrote her first song to the time when she performed the titular song "Beautiful" on the stage of the Carnegie Hall.

The musical narrates her intricate love story with husband Gerry Goffin who influenced her, encouraged her and collaborated with her during her initial years of songwriting. It also focuses on their friends, Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann who were in the same business.

Beautiful centers on themes such as romance, heartbreak, determination, friendship and self-confidence. It highlights Carole King's inspirational journey towards becoming one of the most celebrated female music artists in the US.

The creative team behind the musical

The jukebox musical has been orchestrated by a team of theatre giants. The book for the musical has been penned down by Douglas McGrath who has worked on projects for the stage and the big screen. Some of his notable works include titles such as Bullets over Broadway, Infamous, Nicholas Nickleby, Emma and His Way among others. The directorial responsibilities for Beautiful are handled by Marc Bruni. Since the late 1990s, Bruni has been associate director and later director of many musicals and plays Off-Broadway. Beautiful is his directorial debut on Broadway. The choreography of the musical has been supervised by Josh Prince whereas Jason Howland provides the musical direction.

San Francisco tryout, then Broadway and West End

The first production of Beautiful was a tryout at the Curran Theatre in San Francisco. This pre-Broadway engagement ran an entire month from September 2026 through October. It was so highly anticipated that within days, the entire run was sold out. Jesse Mueller received standing ovation for her portrayal of the titular legend Carole King.

In early 2026, Beautiful premiered on Broadway at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre. Along with Mueller, other cast members that headlined the stage included names such as Anika Larsen as Cynthia Weil, Jake Epstein as Gerry Goffin and Jarrod Spector as Barry Mann. A special appearance by Carole King was made during one of the shows where she joined the cast to sing "You've Got a Friend."

A year later, the musical crossed the Atlantic to open on London's West End at the Aldwych Theatre. The cast was included British actors and actresses.So names such as Katie Brayben, Alan Morrissey, Gary Trainor, Glynis Barber, Lorna Want and Ian McIntosh populated the playbill.

2026 tour of the US
