In the show, the audience is guided through a brief but entertaining sampling of India's rich and breath-taking diversity. Music, dance and performance traditions have shaped the 'collective consciousnesses' of the Indian diaspora worldwide.

Bharati is at once a celebration of the vitality of the land's traditions and an invitation to sample and take part in their unique energy. Due to continuous reinvention and renewal, the India's old traditions appear to be in a state of constant flux. But, the performances shown are truly contributing notably to keeping India alive in its collective imagination.

Since the concept of Bharati is derived from ancient Sanskrit theatrical and narrative traditions, it is also featuring a contemporary tale of love. The narrator, Sutradhar, holds the threads of the tale whereas the audience is guided through a simple but contemporary tale of love and wonder.

The entire performance is punctuated by a mix of 14 songs and dances. While the dances serve to induce a state of enchantment, the narrator interweaves the distinct episodes of the plot.

The plot primarily culminates in a single question of contemporary relevance. Cheeky and witty, the Sutradhar's clown-like persona serves to counter the over-emphasis on 'other-worldly' elements occupying the Indian society.

As story continues, along with the hero, people sitting in the hall confront the dilemma about balancing indigenous traditions of a family/society and modernity of the world.

Evocative of the best story-telling traditions of the East, where stories are framed within other ones, the musical frames encompass a world in which the magic is normal and the normal is magic.

A characteristic feature of rambling, multi-story texts and the Sutradhar together personify the eternal appeal of a fine tale, well presented. Heroes and heroins in the Indian tales are the ones who usually undergo trials and tribulations before being reunited with each other.

The hero embarks on an obvious journey that parallels a deeper mystical one within the self. The journey must be made to reclaim roots, recover lost paths and end fragmentation and separation. Unlike voyages motivated by glory and ambition, the story of Bharati revolves around the journey within.

This journey is led to unknown destinations, but in reverse directions while, the search is about the essence of one's being and existence.

Tantalizing glimpses of the eternal are seen in the rapidly changing face of India, reflecting the country's diversity and the myriad influences. These are shown them as being absorbed and internalized within the fabric of Indian society.

Bharati is a character of a lady synonymous with the spirit of India. Orphaned at an early age, she was raised and living with Dhomraj, king of Varanasi's cremation grounds. Siddharth is an Indian-born engineer, raised and living in the U.S.

He arrives in Varanasi to work on the Ganga Cleaning Project. Cynical and contemptuous of things, Siddharth is nevertheless attracted to the mysterious and elusive Bharati. She is also attracted towards him.

Domraja, patriarchal and over-protective, hinders the development of proximity between the two. For Siddharth, the process of falling in love with Bharati is one of inner transformation through who he falls in love with India.

Sidddhart explores the traditional and the modern; India where all the centuries seem to coexist together in time, yet one that is constantly changing and evolving. As Bharati introduces him to the wonder of India, Siddharth ends up discovering himself and the meaning of love.
