It is a story whose venue is St. Petersburg, capital of present day Russia, a century ago. It is made up of two different acts. In the first act,  a toymaker who is rather ingenious and makes 'magical' toys is preparing and wrapping up toys he has created for the Petrov family. His name is Drosselmeyer. He takes these toys to the Petrov family's home and on his way he passes a magical clock, an artefact for which he is responsible, and this clock chimes and reveals three 'magical' images - a nutcracker, a ballerina and a Rat King (a terrifying one, at that!).The toymaker reaches the Petrov home and then hands out the various toys that he has created for the children. He gives a nutcracker, a beautifully crafted one, to Marya Petrov and Nicholas, Marya's brother, receives a 'rat's head' as a toy. Nicholas, Marya's brother, takes his rat's head and smashes the Nutcracker - breaking it. The toymaker then starts 'weaving' his magic - and this is when the true story, the journey begins. Nicholas is going around the house and looking for the Nutcracker. He discovers the toymaker, Drosselmeyer, who intentionally leaves behind his magical sack filled with a rat's cape and a sword - Nicholas discovers them and wears them. He now turns into a rat and begins what is to be a 'great' battle.Marya, our main star and the heroine of our story, comes to the rescue of the Nutcracker who has been captured by the Rat King, battles with the Rat King and slays him - thereby rescuing the Rat King. Nicholas, as the battle ends, realizes that conflict is only a path towards 'darkness' - he understands that his sister, Marya's, support and love to him is what matters most.  
The choreographer of this fabulous performance is none other than John McFall. He has been with the Atlanta Ballet for around 15 years as of date and has helped guide the Atlanta Ballet towards establishing itself as one of the foremost dance companies within the US. He has infused imagination and innovation with theatrical performance so much so that audiences are left inspired and amazed by the performances choreographed by John McFall and the Atlanta Ballet.
