ALTAR BOYZ-A musical-comedy burlesque that gives sheer fun and gripping music throughout their stay at stage. Five band members are really ultra-talented sinfully attractive from Ohio. Five boys are lead singer Matthew (the pretty-boy, leader of the bunch), on second comes Mark (a sensitive soul with a deep faith in Cher), third one is Luke (a bad-boy with an interest in communion wine), Juan (a hot-blooded sentimental singer with a infatuation for appealing girls) and the forth one is Abraham (the only nice Jewish boy, who is confused what he is doing here, though I am sure he owe an explanation to his mother for this).
Whenever they present their signature hits including the lyrics like Girl, you make me wanna wait and Jesus called me on my cell phone, they start playing jokes on each other that always add an irresistible humor to the show and leave the audience helplessly laughing. They start to inquire their faith in each other, and wonder if fate is really holding them together or is it just their extra-firm hair gel. With their sugary harmonies, scandalously extravagant dancing and an unnerving sense of fashion, these guys are fated to rock the world! Altar Boyz-the musical is fit for complete family, it is a pure 90 minutes entertainment and they are also the winner of the 2005 Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Musical.
The musical is about a struggling Christian boy band driving the cult of America's latest fascination with religion. The music is equipped with captivating melodies, unusual moves, and not to forget the product in their hair, all these factors have took them to the pinnacle of pop. Matthew, Mark, Luke, Juan, and Abraham are just the perfect five to make an uncontrollable band. The choreography is fierce, athletic by Christopher Gattelli, the five boys sweat crazily. Altar Boyz-gripping audience's attention all the time with their tremendous vocals as well as non-stop dance steps. All five actors are gifted with tremendous voices and acute and apt comic timing. Scott Porter as Matthew, the ultimate heartthrob, chooses an attractive girl from the spectators, sits her up on stage, and sings his hit solo number; Something about you makes me want to wait. Tyler Maynard as Mark, the secretive gay Twinkie, is a comic boss.
Once on the stage he halts the show with a comic part that how Matthew who he indicates as his secret crush, assists him come out ... no, it's not what you think? Andy Karl is the rough street kid, Luke, with the hip-hop deadly dance moves having a heart of gold. Luke is so full of energy on stage that once he was sent away for sometime for exhaustion. And at another time he was so worn out he cracked up the van. Juan, played by Ryan Duncan, is the sizzling Latin gifted with Ricky Martin moves; his hair gets sexier the more he sweats, you can rate him as the sexiest band member. And the forth and the final one is Abraham, the hip-hop Jew played by David Josefsberg. There is nothing in Altar Boyz's show that can irritate the religious fundamentalists, they joke in a harmless way not hurt anyone's feeling. The underlined meaning of the comic part is to make all sorts of spectators to forget their worries and laugh their heart out. The musical is equally enjoyable for the kids as well as adults. Altar Boyz just give simple message of power of love, acceptance and yes the great hair products. The experience of this musical is one of those experiences that can leave a person stunned for days.
