Ain’t Too Proud is the electrifying tale of five bright-eyed young men who set out to make it big in the entertainment industry. Armed with that one dream and a sound that would take the music industry by storm, The Temptations rose from the streets of the Motor City to cement their place as one of the finest vocal groups that ever lived.

The People Behind the Craft

Ain’t Too Proud has been written by actress and playwright Dominique Morisseau, a winner of multiple Obie Awards. Furthermore, with a couple of Tony Awards to his name, Des McAnuff of Jersey Boys fame is the man in the director’s chair while choreography has been managed by Tony nominee Sergio Trujillo. The Colombia-born stage choreographer and dancer’s previous credits include On Your Feet and Jersey Boys.

Productions

Ain’t Too Proud made its off-Broadway debut at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in 2017. While this initial run was a small one, it didn’t stop the musical from becoming the highest-grossing production in the history of that theater.

Subsequent showings occurred in 2018 at the Kennedy Center in Washington, the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles and the Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto. Broadway debut followed in 2019 at midtown-Manhattan’s Imperial Theatre.

Honors and Accolades

In 2019, the Broadway production of Ain’t Too Proud picked up 12 nominations at the 73^rd Tony Awards. It went on to win the big prize for “Best Choreography.” The play was also nominated at the Grammys, Drama Desk Awards, Drama League Awards and the Outer Critics Circle Awards among others.
