A Raisin in the Sun is a heart breaking and emotional family drama written by the ever famous Lorraine Hansberry. The play was originally showcased on Broadway in the year 1959 and won the hearts of many theater fans on just the first few showings. The play's lead role is the character named Walter Lee Younger, a complicated and deep personality who instantly grabs the audience's attention. Younger is an ambitious and passionate man, who wants greater things in life but is sadly misguided regarding several things.
A Raisin in the Sun depicts the struggles of a normal family and the dilemmas they go through when they experience a change in fortune. The play presents the story of The Younger family and Walter, and the predicaments they go through when Walter's elderly mother has the good luck to inherit a large sum of money from an unexpected source. Walter, wanting to multiply the money and getting more out of the unexpected windfall, suggests investing the cash in the opening of a liquor store. However, his mother wants a better standard of living and wishes to see the money used in a way which improves the way they live and plans to buy a house in a white neighborhood. Walter and his mother enter a tussle of sorts, as each character is driven by its own wishes and desires. As Walter fights with this predicament, two more characters walk in his life, who play a major role in forcing him to assess his social standing, even though he does so mostly in terms of his financial condition.
The play, A Raisin in the Sun is a landmark drama when it was first released on stage and even after so many years is considered one of the most eye opening and thought provoking plays. It is one of the very first theater shows that were showcased on Broadway which made an in-depth examination of the life and experiences that the African-American families had to live before the civil rights were introduced USA. Even though Hansberry's revolutionary play went through a lot of skepticism by the theater critics and people of the industry and was thought to be a risky venture at first by many, A Raisin in the Sun stayed on the theater stage for two years in a row. It was lucky enough to be nominated for four Tony Awards and is the very first play to be written by an African-American lady which was produced on Broadway.
A Raisin in the Sun is all set for a historic revival which will greet all its fans in 2014. The play will be showcased at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre, the exact same location at which the actual play was first debuted about fifty five long years ago. This time A Raisin in the Sun will be directed by the world renowned and extremely talented Kenny Leon, who means to add his own unique take to the brilliant story and setting. The production will see Kenny Leon once again get together with the brilliant Mr. Washington, after they worked together on the Broadway production of Fences in 2010.
