The Tacoma Rainiers is a unique name for minor league baseball team, which plays in the Pacific Coast League. They are the AAA affiliate of the Seattle Mariners. It is in the town of Tacoma since 1960. It has been in the PCL, the longest current active streak of membership in the league.

Tacoma's history tells us that it had joined PCL as the Tacoma Tigers, in 1904. It had relocation from Sacramento after the 1903 season. The Tigers had won the first PCL pennant, by finishing first in both halves of the split season schedule.

They got a chance to win first-half championship in 1905, but at later played so badly in the second half that they were forced to move back to Sacramento. Their name was declared as the Sacramento Solons, and losing the postseason series to the Angels. The PCL had not returned to Tacoma for another 55 years.

The present franchise was incepted in the year of 1960, it was the time when the Phoenix Giants, being the affiliates of the San Francisco Giants had moved to Tacoma and became the Tacoma Giants. The Giants has decided to move the team back to Phoenix in the year of 1965.

The team had switched over to different names for 19 years like the Tacoma Cubs Tacoma Twins, and Tacoma Yankees. The team had become associated with the nearby Seattle Mariners in 1995, whose AAA team for the previous ten seasons had been the Calgary Cannons.

Tacoma had added the Rainiers name as a tribute to the Seattle Rainiers minor league teams that played in Seattle from 1938-1964 in the PCL. The Tacoma Rainiers usually play their home games at Cheney Stadium. Oakland Athletics power hitters Mark McGwire, Jos? Canseco and Jason Giambi played for the Tacoma Tigers on their way to baseball stardom.
