The Pensacola Blue Wahoos are a minor league baseball team with a deep rooted association with the sport. They have been a part of baseball in one form or another for decades. The Pensacola Blue Wahoos were incepted in the year 2012 but they can trace their history back to the end of the 1950's, 1959 to be precise. It was that year that a minor league baseball team by the name of "Charleston White Sox" came into existence. They were member of the South Atlantic League.

The franchise moved to various places over the next few years before settling in Columbus in the year 1969.  The name prompted a name change as well and they began to be known as "Columbus Astros." "Houston Astros" took them under their wings and became their major league affiliates. That arrangement began in 1970 and lasted for the next eighteen years.

 In 1988, the team's owner asked season ticket holders to take part in a contest in order to decide a new name for the team. "Columbus Mudcats" got the nod. They remained in Columbus for the next three years before moving their base to the city of Zebulon and the name was then subsequently changed to "Carolina Mudcats."

The change of city turned out to be a good decision as the Mudcats didn't take too long to make their mark on the sport. 1995 and 1966 saw them clinch two successive Southern League crowns. Not only that, but they also got their hands on the prestigious Bob Freitas Award in 1996. A few barren years followed before the Mudcats won the division in 2008.

Two years later however, the Mudcats were bought by "Quint Studer." He owned an independent baseball side named "Pensacola Pelicans" but wanted to bring a new Double-A team to the city. The deal to take control of Mudcats however wasn't easy. Studer had to sell his existing team in order to take ownership of the Mudcats. On top of that, Studer had to help re-locate "Kinston Indians" to Zebulon. As part of the agreement the Indians were to take the Mudcats name following the move.

He then proceeded to take his new team to Pensacola and the name Wahoos was agreed upon after a poll. The team began to play in 2012 and their star "Billy Hamilton" ended the debut campaign with a record setting one hundred and fifty five stolen bases.
