WWE Money in the Bank is a pay-per-view event held by WWE each year. It was held for the first time in 2010 and has been held annually since then. The event takes its name from the Money in the Bank ladder match, an event that previously took place at WrestleMania. The Money in the Bank ladder match, the precursor to what is the WWE Money In the Bank event today, was held first in 2005 at WrestleMania 21. In this six man match, the first person to grab a briefcase hanging at the top of the ring emerged as the victor. The winner was guaranteed a world championship match at any time during the next twelve months.

In this format, the match was held for five years until 2010, when a specific pay-per-view event was created around the match. Since 2010, the event has featured two ladder matches. The first was for a WWE Championship shot and the second for a World Heavyweight Championship shot. Their briefcases were colored red and blue respectively for Raw and Smackdown matches.

In 2014, WWE Money In the Bank's format changed to a single ladder match, for a shot at the then newly unified World Heavyweight Championship. A gold briefcase was subsequently introduced.

In 2010, the winners were Kane and The Miz respectively. The former cashed in on a match with Rey Mysterio, winning the World Heavyweight Championship. Similarly, The Miz faced Randy Orton and won the WWE Championship. In 2011, Alberto Del Rio and Daniel Bryan won the two matches; the former faced CM Punk and won the WWE Championship whereas the latter faced Big Show and won the World Heavyweight Championship. This match was famous because the Big Show held the title for only forty five seconds.

In 2012, John Cena and Dolph Ziggler won the two matches. Cena faced CM Punk, won the match by disqualification due to Big Show interfering but failed to win the WWE Championship due to DQ rules. Ziggler faced Alberto Del Rio and became the World Heavyweight Champion.

In 2013, Randy Orton won the WWE Championship match, faced Daniel Bryan at SummerSlam and won the title. Similarly, Damien Sandow faced John Cena for the World Heavyweight Championship but failed to win the title after Cena defeated him by pinfall.   

In 2014, the first ladder match was held in the traditional style but featured no title shot. It was won by Seth Rollins. The actual WWE Money In Bank ladder match saw John Cena, Alberto Del Rio, Randy Orton, Sheamus, Cesaro, Bray Wyatt, Kane and Roman Reigns face off against each other. John Cena won the match and thus won a shot at the World Heavyweight Championship, for any time, in the next twelve months.
