The upcoming edition of the FIFA World Cup will put thirty two teams up against each other at the biggest stage of them all. Since one place has already been allotted to the hosts Brazil, the rest of the spots have to be earned by the rest of the teams. Even though they are the defending champions, Spain too has to earn a spot to be able to compete in the 2014 FIFA World Cup. For the remainder of thirty one spots, 207 teams from different nations and six different FIFA Confederations will be going through a strict and unforgiving qualification process. For the upcoming edition of the FIFA World Cup, South Sudan was not eligible for the World Cup Qualifier because they became members of FIFA way after the qualifying process began. In addition to South Sudan; Bhutan Mauritania, Guam and Brunei was also not able to enter.
 
The qualifying process kicked off back in June 2011, and since then till January 7, 2013 only 120 teams have made it through. The number of teams will further shrink down to thirty one as the World Cup draws nearer. For the limited spots for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, eight hundred and sixteen qualifying matches will take place.
 
The six different FIFA Confederations are further allotted a certain number of teams that will come out of it to compete in world and not more than that. For that matter UEFA has been allocated with thirteen places, AFC with four or five places, CAF with five places, CONMEBOL with five or six places, CONCACAF with three or four places and OFC with no or one place. UEFA and CONMEBOL have yet to start their qualification process. UEFA's qualifying match ups will kick off from March 22, 2013 while CONMEBOL's will start on March 22, 2013.
