The World Championship Horse Show is hosted at the popular Kentucky State Fairgrounds which is in Louisville, Kentucky. This horse show takes place in the Freedom Hall at the venue and is one of the largest horse shows in America. The event comprises of Hackney pony, American saddlebred and Standardbred. It is normally hosted every year in August and it coincide the show dates schedule with the Kentucky State Fair and also in the hub of the show season of the impeccable three horse breeds of the show.
The horse or the rider who wins this championship is given the title of being a world champion. The one who comes on the second place at the event is given the title of reserve world champion. In addition to this, even a horse can win the title of world's grand championship. The one who wins this championship is a victor of at least one of these titles.
There are divisions in the World Championship Horse Show also. Many different classes exist for ladies, amateurs and also junior exhibitors. Some divisions are there for younger horses and for Saddlebred ponies or horses. All through the season, all of these various divisions contest against one another to win trophies as well as ribbons.
The Saddlebred divisions at this horse show comprise of nearly six to thirty divisions each. The number of the divisions depends entirely on the number of entries that enter the contest. If there are larger numbers of entries, then they are divided into two different sections. On the other hand, the hackney ponies take part in a total of four divisional contests namely the road, pleasure driving ponies, harness and hackney (cobtail). The Standardbred has only one division in the contest for road horses.
Ever since 1902, the World Championship Horse Show has been taking place yearly. Only in 1904, the show did not take place as there was no fair being held that year. Also in 1945, the show had to be cancelled as World War II had broken out. The famous horse Wing Commander was the first Saddlebred to have won world's grand championship titles in all of the five gaited divisions in 1953. After that horse, another mare which was known as My-My won the championships for three years in a row from 1963 till 1968, however, the horse could not win her 7th title as she died. Many other horses have entered the show in recent times and have won the world's grand championship titles.
In 2006, the World Championship Horse Show held at the Kentucky State Fair offered a western pleasure for the very first time for the division of the Saddlebreds. The show has yet to offer a park pleasure, hunt seat or even a junior exhibitor park and an adult equitation division. The management and the operators of the show plan to include all of these in their show in the future though.
