Popularly known as the "Wachovia Championship" and "Quail Hollow Championship," in the past, Wells Fargo Championship is a top notch spring sporting event in Charlotte, NC. It is held each year in the first week of May at the "Quail Hollow Club." This event holds a very special position on the PGA Tour because it leads off to "The Players Championship." The Championship inaugurated in 2003 at the Quail Hollow Club. This private club has been hosting the event every year since then. The club also gave the tournament its name when its title sponsor Wachovia left it. The Quail Hollow Club started off in the early ninety fifties and has been actively used as a golfing facility ever since. Before the Wells Fargo Championship came to the club, it had already hosted the PGA Tour Kemper Open for a decade from 1969 to 1979. The Champions Tour PaineWebber Invitational was the second tournament to be held here which started in 1983 and went on till 1989.
The Wells Fargo Championship is managed and operated by Charity for Education. The organization has been giving proceeds from this event to local and international causes since 2003. The Championship has completed a decade with great success and is in its 11th year. This year the event will work according to the tradition of bringing top tier players as well as patrons for an annual showcase of their skill, technique, game play and competitiveness. In 2003, David Toms became the first winner of the Wachovia Championship. In 2004 Joey Sindelar won the tournament through the playoffs. The tight contest between Vijay Singh and Jim Furyk in 2005 ended when Singh won in the playoffs. Furyk made a comeback in 2006 and aced the championship and also made it to the playoffs where he beat Trevor Immelman. Furyk's win in 2006 was special as it was the third consecutive year that the tournament needed extra holes.
The 2005 tournament was the last in the streak of 142 tournaments Tiger Woods played without missing a single cut. Woods came back to win the tournament in 2007. Anthony Kim earned the first PGA Tour win of his career at the 2008 tournament while making the overall best score of 272. In 2009 the tournament got the name Quail Hollow Championship and was won by Sean O'Hair. The next year Rory McIlroy lifted the trophy, his first USPGA win. The event got the name Wells Fargo Championship in 2011. This year Lucas Glover went on to play and win through the playoffs. The 2012 championship was won by Rickie Fowler. It was the first win of his career that he bagged when he birdied the very first playoff hole.
One of the biggest upset in the history of this event happened in 2005. At the beginning of the final round, Sergio Garcia who was leading the tournament by six strokes lost in the playoffs. This was a record of the largest lead lost by a player on a PGA Tour.
