The event discontinued just three years after it started off but after a gap of four years it was revived. Initially it was known as the Phoenix Open but in 2003 the naming rights were acquired by Friedman Billings Ramsey bank and it was then called FBR Open. The name eventually in 2010 was changed to Waste Management Phoenix Open. The first ever winner of Phoenix Open was Ralph Gudahl, he won this tournament in 1932 and the prize money was $600. Famous local personality Robert Goldwater played a key role in reviving this tournament. For quite a few years the tournament was held at two different locations namely Phoenix Country Club and Arizona Country Club. Since 1987 it is being regularly held at the TPC of Scottsdale. This is a 36-hole golf course situated in Scottsdale, Arizona. World renowned golfer Tiger Woods stunned everyone by scoring a hole in one at this golf course in 1997.

Waste Management Phoenix Open has been regularly taking place since 1944. Ben Hogan and Jimmy Demaret were the two most successful golfers during the 40's decade and both won this tournament twice. US golfer Arnold Palmer made history by becoming the only player to win this tournament three time in a row. Only two other players have won this tournament thrice and they are Gene Littler and Mark Calcavecchia. Former no 1 Fijian golfer Vijay Singh has also won this tournament twice.
