At the start of the sixties, national football leagues were founded in Turkey thus giving rise to clubs in various cities. In Trabzon, three clubs, Idmangucu, Karadenizgucu and Martispor merged to form a club that was then known as Trabzonspor Genclik Kulubu. Its first president was Ali Osman Ulusoy but the club stopped playing within a year. Right after that, the three original clubs joined up with Idmanocagi and reincarnated the club
Aside from fielding a men's football team, Trabzonspor also fields a women's football team and sides that play basketball, junior soccer, judo, swimming and shooting. The club was founded after several local clubs in Turkey merged and has since then gone on to win six Super League championships. Of these, three were won consecutively. The club is ranked as one of the top five in Turkey. Trabzonspor's six league titles puts it among the elite when it comes to domestic pedigree.

It has also won the Basbakanlik Kupasi or Chancellor Cup five times, the Red Group Championship once and the Cyprus Peace Cup once, resulting in a total of thirty one trophies won so far. It is also the only Turkish sports club to win top level league titles in both men's and women's football.
