The Barclays is a golf tournament that is part of the PGA Tour. It has been taking place each year since its founding in 1967 with its location often changing. It was held at Farmingdale, New York in 2012, at the Bethpage State Park's Black Course. In 2012, it was a seventy one par course that was nearly seven and a half thousand yards long. Played in the stroke play format, it has a total prize fund of eight million dollars. Bob Gilder holds the record for the highest aggregate score, at two hundred and seventy one, a feat he accomplished in 1982. Three golfers tie for the highest to par score in The Barclays. These are Johnny Miller, who first made the achievement in 1974 at a nineteen par. He was followed by Bob Gilder, who achieved the same score in 1982 and Dustin Johnson who did the same in 2011. The current champion and winner of the 2012 event is Nick Watney from the US. It was founded as the Westchester Classic in 1967 and was played at the Westchester Country Club, located in Westchester County, New York. It has been known by many names based on sponsors and locations but is still known by many of its fans as The Westchester.
The Barclays is often played after the US Open and often sees huge attendances, with the highest attendance records to date in the 2001 event in which the legendary Tiger Woods participated, despite heavy rains disrupting the last two days of the event. In 2005, Padraig Harrington made tournament history when he used a sixty five putt and eagled the par five eighteenth hole, to win the tournament and become that year's champion. Vijay Singh is the pro golfer with the largest number of tournament wins, at four.
From 2007 onwards, it has been sponsored by Barclays Bank, thus its current name. It starts off the playoffs for the FedEx Cup in the PGA Tour. One hundred and twenty five golfers qualify for the event, based on the number of FedEx Cup points won during the PGA Tour's regylar season. From 2008 onwards, it has taken place at various clubs in the wider New York metropolitan area. Due to Hurricane Irene, the tournament was shortened to fifty four holes and finished just hours before the tournament hit.
In 2013, the tournament is set to take place at the Liberty National Golf Club with a similar purse of eight million dollars, of which the winner takes home one million, four hundred and forty thousand. In 2010, Matt Kucher from the US won the tournament, which was held at the Ridgewood Country Club and Dustin Johnson, also an American, won the tournament held in 2011. In 2007, Steve Stricker won the tournament, held at the Westchester Country Club. In 2008, Vijay Singh from Fiji won the tournament, which was held at the Ridgewood Country Club and Heath Slocum won the tournament in 2009, then held at the Liberty National Golf Club.
The first winner of the tournament was Jack Nicklaus, who won it in 1967 and went home with a fifty thousand dollar prize, out of a total purse of two hundred and fifty thousand. Vijay Singh is the pro golfer who has won the tournament the most times, at four, having won it in 1993, 1995, 2006 and 2008.
Four pro golfers tie for the second most wins of the tournament. This includes Jack Niclaus, who won the first ever tournament and then won it again in 1972. Seve Ballesteros also won the tournament twice; in 1983 and 1988. Similarly, Ernie Els won it is 1996 and 1997 with Sergio Garcia recently winning it twice in 2001 and 2004. in its forty seventh year now, it will be held at New York golf courses for the next several years.
