Belonging from Stockton, California, the Stockton Thunder were founded in the year 1990. They are a minor league professional team and part of the Pacific Division of the Western Conference in the ECHL. The home games of the team are played at the Stockton Arena, which is a state of the art field that can hold more than nine thousand people in the audience. The team has an affiliation with the National Hockey League's New York Islanders. Their uniform colors are white, silver and gold. The current captain of the team is Garet Hunt, while they have the talented athlete Rich Kromm as their head coach. The team is under the ownership of SC Hockey Franchise Corporation.

The Stockton Thunder were initially known as the Cincinnati Cyclones. The team reached the play offs of the Riley Cup in the first couple of seasons. Shortly afterwards, the team was shifted to Birmingham, Alabama and their name got changed to the Birmingham Bulls. They had the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex as their home arena. Here too, the team managed to reach the play offs no less than nine times.

In the season of the years 2000 - 2001, the team  moved to Atlantic City, New Jersey. The name of the team was once again changed to the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies. The team managed to win the Northeast Division Championship a year after their shifting and also reached the finals of the Conference Championship in the year 2002. The following year, the team managed to win the Kelly Cup.

The following year, the SC Hockey Franchise Corporation bought the franchise and moved it to Stockton, California and the team became The Stockton Thunder in May of the year 2005. The first head coach of the team was Chris Cickocki.  Some of the most popular members of the team include Andy Contois, Brad Farynuk and Ryan MacMurchy, who got chosen to be part of the All Star team of the National Conference in January of the year 2007 for the All Star Game of ECHL the following year.
