The Springfield Falcons is an American ice hockey team, a member of the Northeast Division of the Eastern Conference of the American Hockey League, the AHL. Its home arena is the MassMutual Center, located in Springfield, Massachusetts and it has been active in American pro ice hockey since 1994. Its official colors are blue, red, black, white and gray. It is a franchise owned by the Falcons Hockey Entertainment LLC. Bruce Landon is the team's general manager with Brad Larsen as the head coach and Ryan Craig as the captain. The Springfield Falcons is affiliated with the Columbus Blue Jackets, an NHL franchise, and with the Evansville IceMen, an ECHL franchise. It has been active since 1994 and has since then won three spectacular Division Championships, the last of which was in the 2012 to 2013 season, making them the current reigning Division Champion. They have a fierce rivalry with the Providence Bruins and the Connecticut Whale, with games featuring these two teams often seeing sparks fly and sportsmanship put to the test.
In 1994, Springfield's AHL team, the Springfield Indians, was sold and moved to Worcester to become the Worcester IceCats. The team's general manager, Bruce Landon, alongsiwth local rink owner Wayne LaChance founded an AHL expansion that began playing in 1995 as the Springfield Falcons. They were then affiliated with the Winnipeg Jets and the Hartford Whalers, the latter affiliation continuing to date. The first ever goal by the team was scored by John Stevens, also the co-captain of the team with Rob Murray, and the last captain of the Springfield Indians.
From then on, the team rose up the ranks of the AHL, defeating some of the mightiest teams in the league. Since then, the team has spawned a large number of famous players, such as Jean-Guy Trudel, its leading point scorer and Daniel Briere, who would go on to play for the Philadelphia Flyters. Players such as Manny Legace, the leading goaltender, went on to play for the St Louis Blues with Nikolai Khabibulin going on to become a Stanley Cup winning goalie. Rob Murray, captain and leader of the team, went on to coach the New York Islanders. Players such as Martin Cibak, Ryan Craig, Jeff Daniels, Nolan Pratt, Theo Peckham and Liam Reddox would go on to play for the NHL, demonstrating high levels of talent and sportsmanship, groomed as members of this fabulous franchise. Many of their players are seen live at team games via Springfield Falcons tickets.
